This is a nice, friendly perzine in the vien of the classic Muffin Bones. There’s information on butterflies taken from an encyclopedia,tons of photography throughout, which is a treat to look at, wintertime prose/fiction (?) that painted a picture in my head, appreciating sunrises, writing on her interest in photography, and more. I really enjoyed this. Monica is really good at creating continuity. 7” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.

Oh sweet holy Jesus, this comic kicks ass. I think Ass Whine has made it to my permanent list of favorites. Carrie has a very unique and talented block/Cubist style that makes her comix really appealing in the first place, but I can also really relate to them. She writes about being lonely/depressed alot, and not just in terms of acknowle ing she is lonely/depressed in her mind, but also in terms of things she does when she is lonely/depressed, especially drinking. #4 has a story about running into her ex who was wearing a jacket she had stolen from Carrie, Thanksgiving, a story about getting a vibrator, crushes, getting a lap dance and the awkwardness of that situation, and memories. #5 starts out with an account of insomnia, wanting to be a star, Easter, alienation, feeling anxiety over calling someone, visiting Scotland, running int her new infamous ex in a health food store, her mom, wanting to get laid, and more. Carrie has a really effective way of exaggerating all the facial expressions and movements to the point where it is just funny or minimalizing movement to create a serious, reflective, sad tone... 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 and 20 pages respectively.

This issue is tighter than #1 with well-researc d and written articles on army recruiters, racism is army recruiting, animal testing for war, women and queers in the military, facts about the draft, and a resource list. This is a great zine that will make you look at the military in a more critical light. Recommended. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 16 pages.

I think AF has broken into the realm of my favorite zines. I’ve found myself reading and re-reading it. My favorite thing in here is a right-on rant by Anne about being a girl who writes about punk. She mostly responds to those who accuse her of catering to boys and their egos, and she makes many good points about herself and the role she and other women play in punk and society. Like Outpunk, AF is a zine that I want to see grow and eventually dethrone MRR. Other high points in this issue are interviews with Larry of the Rickets (with funny stories about Olympia scenesters and Calvin Johnson), a cute interview with Boi of DA and Betloogs zine, a funny and fairly accurate thing by Gloria Steinem about men and menstruation, a funny slam by Anne on Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil, GB Jones love, zine reviews (Anne really knows how to pick - I didn’t have to waste time picking out the interesting-sounding ones), more Anonymous Boy cartoons and his account of the Dirty Bird festival, which was really interesting to read - his impressions are the exact opposite of mine almost, tons of record reviews, hate mail for columnist Donnie Switchblade that I think I’d have to agree with, and a fun collage of band logos on the back that I like to stare at. This is great stuff and highly recommended for anyone who loves punk rock. 8 1/2” x 11”, 44 pages.

This is a really amazing zine, well worth the $2, that you must send away for! There’s so much to read in here, and the thing is fucking huge, but it doesn’t ever get aloof and glossy. Throughout the entire issu Sabrina retains her snotty/fuck-you composure that I love. This issue features an really interesting (especially since I haven’t even heard of this band) interview with Loi of Abrassive Relations that discusses feminism in the Philippines, an I-view/tour diary of Thorazine, and (for me) the highlight of the issue being Sabrina’s rants, erm... attacks, actually, on Asian fetishists, stereotypes of Asian sexuality, and the mailorder bride business. Oh my lord, I have had some or many encounters with al of the aforementioned. It’s good to see someone FINALLY point out what garbage it all is. Also included is “Hospital Horrors” where Sabrina had a benign tumor removed from her breasts on one occasion and almost died (!) on the other, Neo-Nazi news updates, an angry account of a dumb guy asking her why she can’t get a guy, a review of “Peeling the Banana” (an Asian performance piece), a Laguna, Philippines scene report, Filipino history/mythology, stuff on her corporate job, stuff on Wing Chun, a form f martial arts created by a woman, punk stuff (mostly about how dumb alot of it is), along with a letter from Matt Wobensmith about getting fucked with by MRR among other things..., reviews, and more, if you can believe that. Whew. I like it alot better than A. Magazine. 7” x 8 1/2”, 72 pages.

This is a great traditional riot grrrl zine with rants on anger and swearing, sexism in media, a list of gross pick-up lines (Lisa, here’s my personal favorite: “Do you like music?” (person being questioned says “yes”) “Well, let’s go upstairs and play with my organ!”), thoughts on being raped (about a year ago), what happened, and what she's doing now, a review of Sleater-Kinney’s show, an account of self-mutilation, a hilarious thing she found on the Internet about how to stop masturbating, an account of her stay at a mental hospital (sounds like hell), hating herself, riot grrrl, and co acts. This is a really good effort; its engaging, and Lisa uses the space effectively. Recommended. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 24 pages.

I think of Bitch Rag's a zine for somewhat cynical 20-something slacker women with somewhat mean, exploitative sense of humors (but friendly, charming personalities). This issue only enforced that opinion. This issue features interviews with the Revered Horton Heat, Richa Kern, two groupies from the 80s (apparently they got to fuck Poison and Iron Maiden!), and one of those guys that works the rides at amusement parks, an account of a 70s retro party, a birthday party report, 80s-bashing (hey, don’t forgot the virtues of the 80s, like new wave and John Hughes movies!), a (true) story about a junky that is pretty depressing, directions on how to do your own laundry, which is funny that they even bothered to write it, but probably a good idea since alot of people still ha mom doing it for them, remembering KISS, a review of herbal ecstasy (3 out of 4 didn’t get anything good from it), a tribute to the Gremlin car, a profile of the band, ZOOM, a tribute to pot, stuff from the life of a firefighter, an autographed photo of the Bushwackers, fashion, and an unbelievable letter from Scott Baio?! There also is a bunch of really bad recipes for low-fat food, which kind of grossed me out in more ways than one, and tons of amusing and interesting facts (like how to get out of p king tickets and not get your car towed) and stuff for filler. This is a really good pop culture zine, highly recommended to those who can appreciate the (completely apolitical, other than the tips-to-fuck-over-the-man stuff) focus. 8 1/2” x 11”, 80 pages.

This is a really quick read, and mostly what you are paying for is the fancy color cover, but it has alot of punch, so I like it. I wish more girl zines had Sky’s rotten, tell-it-like-it-is attitude. This issue opens up with a candid story of being a teenage runaway. Cryptic Crap walks the fine line between sarcasm and outright lying, and some elements of her runaway story are really farfetched, but then again, fucked up shit happens, especially when you’re homeless... She really makes the whole west coast sound like hell. Then there’s a mean but accurate and informed diatribe on riot grrrl. She hates cute, Hello Kitty, girly zines, and claims that “the real reason Courtney’s loved by most grrrlz is ‘cause she gave all us skanky, homely ones hope that we too can be rich and famous”. Also included is a weird and somewhat nauseating centerfold featuring deformed people on one side and naked pictures of herself on the other; Sky’s ego is kind of overbearing to me, but I bet she wallows in this fact. Do’s and Don’ts for sex, bathroom footage videos, and random bits finish off this entertaining zine. 8 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 20 pages.

#3 is full of personal writing, stuff on being nice, a great comic about her body, a “slice of life” comic, stuff on being thin, body image, etc., the importance of values in society, and more. #4 has comix about entering the adult world, writing on feeling pressure to tell everyone personal shit to “break the silence”, which m es some important points, criticism of “Mad Love”’s shitty portrayal of mental illness, gender roles, depression, memories, and more. I think Cupcake is an exceptional personal zine - it is very straightforward, and I’m impressed by Jocelyn’s courage and ability to articulate. 4 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 20 and 24 pages, respectively.

Some of the pages are hard to read, since about half of the zine is hand-written - in cursive - and everything is chaotically shoved onto the pages. This issue stuff of changing and being inspired by her trip to Portland, overpopulation, feeling alone and kind of freaking out over that, being a musical snob and pop culture, WAC, an interview with spoken word artist, Jolie, and more. This has a really straight forward, typed-out, cut-n-paste quality with very spare illustration. This is a great compilation of writing by Riot Grrrl Venice. As far as anthologies go, whoever coordinated this mostly (?) did a great job in keeping continuity. The format is great - the text is fairly small (not as microscopic as I end up being, though) and easy to read. They’ve made good use of space. There is one piece in here that I think really stands out - how boys can get involved in gender revolution/liberation. This is a really good place for men to start that makes alot of good points beyond “don’t rape women” or “be nice to women”. There’s alot of writing in here by Jenna on feelings she has, a great thing of how being crazy is political, environmental stuff, fat oppression, body image and skinny privilege, guerrilla flyers for teen mags, letters, contacts for different anthology zines, local shit going on, artwork, and more. 8 x 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 36 pages.

This is full of observations of fucked-up stuff ranging from harassment to witnessing man abuse a handicapped woman in a shoe store, stuff on living in the south, exploring how self-hate and sexuality mingle through personal experience, an account of the Philadelphia Riot Grrrl convention, reviews, and a short remembrance to late 80’s/early 90s fad drinks paired with nature activism. Lauren explores her identity through family history and racism as an internal issue and an institution, not limited to white bigots. She also explains what this has to do with you/me. There’s also great writing on class privilege and emotions as layers. There’s also a list of books by queer/non-white women. This is a cute mini-comic that features superhero comix, rants on consumerism at Christmas, an essay on the typical female superhero body, a comic about being bisexual, hair-dos, how to dance like Kid ‘N’ Play, and more. There were some things in here that I disagreed with, like “straight” and “gay” being limiting labels and that large breasts would hinder heroic efforts in real life, but I can see her point. Some of this is kind of hard to read, but this zine is so good, and if you are an abuse survivor or mentally ill, you must read this. Heather Lynn (Hands Off) relates childhood experiences with current experiences, writes about borderline personality, being mentally ill and her background, oppression, and more. Reclaiming my Name is also about mental illness, but has more artwork.. These tw zines balance each other out very well. Highly recommended, essential, even. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 32 pages.

The highlight of this zine is an interview full of pictures of one of my favorite people - Lydia Lunch. The interview is pretty basic, but still a good read and includes a discography at the end. Also featured is a lengthy article on the editor’s lifetime experiences with Christianity, a long analysis of Marquis de Sade, a profile of Emma Goldman, book reviews, reprints from a l al paper of a senior who disrupted graduated with an honest and inflammatory valedictorian speech, quotes, ads from B-movies, and more. I found this to be relatively enjoyable, never boring; A great first issue. 8 1/2” x 11”, 32 pages.

I think Katy’s got an ideal format with the mixture of tons of tiny type, cute, but minimal clip art, and great drawings. This issue has fashion tips (in a fun, creative way, not a gross, YM way), great period stories that will make you feel united with your sisters, cute comix by Rebecca of Velvet Grass, remembering that everyone is valid, easy recipes, lists of good things (you know I’m a sucker for these!) and girl goddesses, a Bjork centerfold and worship, comix about shitty things at Connecticut ska shows, prose, reviews, and more. This zine is so wonderful, adamantly pro-girl, ll-written and edited, and enjoyable, and Katy just amazes me with the sheer amount of shit she is doing! This is a compilation of writing and flyers on the pro-choice movement, among other things. This issues features a history of WAC, commentary and criticism of public school, an really good article on the re tionship between the Right to Life movement and the Nazi Party under Hitler’s command, which is very informative, but since it doesn’t mention this, I figured I’d point out that Hitler also violated women’s reproductive rights by sterilizing “undesirables” against their will, an article on over-population that I totally agree with - this is a burning issue we MUST address, stuff on being a clinic escort and dealing with fundamentalist Christians, refutes to every anti-choice argument out there, an artic from a Memphis newspaper that is also really educational about Martin Luther King’s activism towards the end of his life and how the media criticized it and then censored it, and an article by an ex-pro-lifer about how she became pro-choice. 8 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 28 pages.

This zine has so much personality. It starts out with a portrait of herself, letter from an romantic, depressed, kind of goth boy, eye contact, hating shows, collag , poetry, thoughts on Xanax, childhood stories from indie rock stars, a profile of Theda Bara, a vamp actress from the silent film era, a profile of Goldust, a transgendered WWF wrestler, hating kitsch, crafts, and more. Alot of the writing teeters between stream-of-consciousness rambling and conscious thought. Well-written, easy to read, engaging, no complicated, messy layouts, what more do you need? 8 1/2” x 7”, 44 pages.

Wow. #50? I’m impressed. This is a fairly skinny zine, but it’s only a buck, so big deal, right? It’s kind of a lit/arts/open forum kind of thing. Anyway, there’s a sarcastic article on body mutilation (NOT piercing) being cool, poetry, various writings on pizza, drugs, mice in experiments, fiction, art, cool comix that I really enjoyed about Ann’s life and LH, Blinky comix that I didn’t understand, pondering on why aliens are popular considering how abhorrent they are, a h tory of LH, and more. 8 1/2” x 11”, 26 pages.

I read this during a roadtrip, and found it to be quite educational and enjoyable, although too short. Helena is a great story-teller; she starts off with an account of getting rid of a creepy man in her house with quick thinking - the story is almost funny when she takes command of the situation, touching stories about women she has met in Africa and Asia with a bit of c tural analysis thrown in, rants against shaving your legs, which talks about historical and cultural values regarding leg hair on women or being preoccupied with beauty. Plus, tons of SisterSerpents flyers and mutated ads for make-up/shampoo/lingerie. Not your typical feminist zine in terms of content. 8 1/2” x 11”, 24 pages.

I am a big sucker for good art/clip art, and Moon Fuzz is full of it! From the hilarious 50s kid on the front cover to the wonderful drawings that reminded me of a cross between Shel Silverstein’s and 70s/early 80s era psychedelic “Sesame Street” cartoons to the side-splitting photos of Serra and Cheryl with Barbie limbs coming out of their facial orifices to the rad pictures of kids in 50s glasses... Also included is good, engaging writing on wishing she had enthusiasm for a cause, alot of stream-of-consciousness type of stuff, comix about a day at school, and other awesome shit. My favorite quotes: “What do you do when the rest of the world is nothing like you? What do you do when you realize that’s not true?” and “There is more to life than this”. My only complaint (and I’m totally sorry to say this, especially if it makes you feel bad, Serra, so please don’t be mad) is a comic about two Chinese men that I thought was stereotypical and offensive, but don’t let that turn you off because Moon Fuzz is still really great, and honestly, I can’t wait for another issue. 4” x 4”, 3 pages.

This is a very articulate look at zeitgeist and how it relates to class and race, how trying to make people feel comfortable is a manifestation of self-hate, how class background and how it affects the way her family looks at where she lives (Israel), as well as thoughts on how the American government tries to keep people posted in other cultures as American as possible, defense mechanisms, abuse cles in her family, and more. My New Gun breaks alot of taboos, even the ones in feminism. Highly recommended. 4 1/2” x 5 1/2”, 40 pages.

This is a totally pissed off zine with an awesome cover to start it off. There’s mostly screaming diatribes against disunity among women, subservience, OJ Simpson, bodies as commodities, violence against women, and m e, but the real gems in here are Tasha’s personal observations and thoughts on a couple she sees in the Laundromat, her mother’s life, her aunt’s life, and Jeff’s piece on his mother. These pieces really round out the issue and provide a sense of history and how it affects us now. There’s alot of newspaper clippings and whatnot, as well. 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”, 28 pages.

This is by Liz, a "15-year old sophomore in hi-skool". Most of this is personal rants and observations on shit going on in her school, and I would say that this is more like a long letter than a traditional fanzine. There's writing on herself, feeling lonely, shitty people at her school, watching girls around her make self-depreciating comments and catty remarks towards other girls, alienation, confronting her brother on his hypocrisy of his views on sexism, the "riot grrrl" label, seeing a girl at her school be abused by her ex-bo riend, but being too scared to get involved, being obsessed with people, the administration at her school, opinions on sexism/heterosexism/homophobia/etc. in the Bible, a rant on a man on "Jerry Springer" who had 6 wives, and more. I like the format of he content, very personable and sometimes touching. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 32 pages.

This issue of OP strays away from it’s usual fare as an anthology of writings, comix, and art from mostly old, mostly out of print queer zines. I think this should have been printed as a book because its a very good resource and will still be relevant forever. Zines with reprints include Bikini Kill, Shrimp (by Vaginal Davis), Girl Fiend, Girl Germs, Fat Girl, Positron, and many, many more. Highly recommended, essential even. 8 1/2” x 11”, 72 pages.

This is such an amazing zine. There should be more zines about parenthood, even though this isn't really a zine dedicated to parenting. Jennifer had a baby when she was 15 (or 16?), and she writes about what it was like then and what it is like now, dealing with a 3-year old and trying to be patient, observations of how women often serve as trophies or as whores in relationships, a reading list/zine reviews, clippings of hate crimes directed at queers/ARA stuff, feeling empowered by other women at a 3rd Sex show, natural tampons, HIV facts, lea ing to play bass/a woman who helped her out, feeling torn over sending her kid to school (don't do it, Jennifer!!!), addresses, and classifieds. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", 16 pages.
