BETTER TOMORROW
chapter 1
"Earth"
I remember it like it was yesterday, yet I wasn't that old. Nobody really saw it coming. Of course, those that survived swore they knew it was going to happen. I'm only 24, yet I feel like I'm 50. I've seen so much. I'm a historian, but not by choice.
The year was 2025 when everyone believed it all started. The world was progressing in an amazing state. Homelessness and disease was at an all time low. Technology was beyond your wildest imagination. We finally contacted another lifeform, the Eyrians, not much different from ourselves. Life was good... well, from what I can remember of it. I was 6 at the time, and life, no matter how bad, is never awful to a 6 year old. The only thing I guess we as a society overlooked was the Internet. For years it was a breeding ground for all kinds of people... good and bad. Nobody seriously thought it would be what crippled us. All the wrong people figured it all out... all at the wrong time. Missiles were launched from some of the most obscure places, and before anyone knew it, the Earth was on fire. If it hadn't been for the Eyrians space technology, mankind would have perished in that foolish war. I hesitate to even call it a war... it was a mistake.
We had met the Eyrians about ten years before... that was a mistake in of itself. NASA was doing more testing on Mars. One of the rovers that was sent out there, came back with some alarming pictures. At the time, they saw Eyrians outside of their ship and thought it was an exploration vessel. The Eyrians, however, informed us later that it was a cruise ship. Mars was a touristy place for them. It wasn't quite the first contact people had in mind, but it happened.
The Eyrians had to be the most amazing species that we ever came across as a people. They weren't all that different from us except the fact that they had no ears. It was something a little rough to get used to, but nowadays, I don't even think about it. You never realize something until it's gone. Eyrians could still hear, but... well, that's a long story I'll save for another time. Oh, and they generally had blue or green hair. In many ways, they looked like a group of space punk rockers or something, but they're wicked cool. Their medical and technological advances were beyond anything our people had ever seen before. With them, so many problems and diseases were cured. It was truly a milestone in humankind.
Where was I? Oh yea... The Earth. The Eyrians had helped us build amazing crafts to get off the planet. It became a luxury item for most people... to have a small Eyrian ship to cart them around. Like I said before, that's what saved us. Since so many of those ships were around, people started for the stars when the missiles landed. It all happened so fast. I was at school when the alarms went off. Everyone was running in every which direction. I remember looking up and seeing missiles, planes, ships, you name it... rocket across the sky. I heard explosions just about everywhere... and I didn't know who at the time grabbed me, but before I knew it, I was on a ship blasting out of the atmosphere.
Quite a few ships got off the planet in time, but still... millions died that day. I shutter to think about it. We had enough space technology, and with the help of the Eyrians, what was left of mankind went out to find a new home. The planet was in fire, and those that could be rescued were...but there was so much radiation and debris that the planet wasn't too stable anymore.
Man, that was 18 years ago. Since that time, our society was forced into an a different world... both figuratively and literally. And here I am now, typing away as we orbit Earth. I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Marclee Rhodes, but all my friends call me Marc or Rhodes depending how they met me. I don't quite know how my parents came up with that name. I'm not even sure if it was a family name or not. I never got to ask them.
Anyways, I'm onboard the Sarrogat, a research vessel trying to evaluate the status of the planet. We've been orbiting the planet for the last couple hours, and it still amazed me how we completely screwed up a planet that was once so peaceful. I had seen so many pictures of so many beautiful places there, and because of stupidity, they're now only come to life on computer.
...........
I put down the journal pad. A few days ago, I decided to note everything I saw once we got into orbit... mainly my thoughts... because I hadn't been back here since that day... the day the Earth died. It was so wild to look down there nearly 18 years later, and see the scarring on the planet. We were planning an expedition down there fairly soon... probably in the next day or so... I was anxious due to the fact that the area they want to go back to... was where I lived. And while eighteen years have gone by, I was still nervous about going back there.
I looked out the window towards the planet. There were only a few expeditions out here nowadays... but none were to land on the planet. This was the first.
I kept leaning against the window. The planet, while completely scarred, still looked peaceful. I closed my eyes, and remembered back to all the ships blasting off the planet. There were so many ships in the air... some even crashing into each other... more people dying.
I quickly opened my eyes back up, and shook it off. This was a scientific mission. I had to let as much of the emotion go as I could.
I jumped down from the window, and heard the "clank" as my feet met the floor. This ship was a piece of art... and even state of the art, but wasn't much made for comfort. Everything was solid... and cold even... but hey... such is space.
Walking down the corridor, I was still in my own little world remembering back to that time. I didn't even realize it when I ran into someone.
"Fuck Rhodes, can't you look up for a change?"
"Always the one with words, huh Davis?"
Joshua Davis... a pilot. We didn't get along much, but I thought about him a lot. He was fine as hell. He had dark brown hair, a body that I'd die for, blue eyes, really tan looking skin, probably weighing in around 170lbs or so, and about my height (6 foot). Davis was always flirting with the chicks. In fact, that was what he was doing when I ran into him. He was blabbing off one of his favorite stories about piloting through this asteroid field in record timing. I had to admit, it was impresive... the first time I heard it... but I actually heard nothing when I checked out that body.
I wasn't bad myself. I have dark dirty blond hair, hazel eyes, 6', 165#, baby face, clean cut, smooth all over... I had it all in all the right places... at least I hope I did. I wanted Davis to notice me, but our personalities didn't match all that much. That, and he wasn't into guys really at all. I asked him once if he'd ever go out with me, and that didn't fare too well. It wasn't like I was embarassed to ask him because I'm gay, but because I had to swallow my pride to do it. We just were two different people.
I sighed as I walked past him and the chick that was his victim. He shook his head at me as I walked by. I didn't really even look at the chick. I couldn't decide if she was lucky to be there with him... his body drove me crazy, but his personality was sooooo lacking.
My mind was side tracked after that. I was thinking about what all had happened in my past, but after running into Davis, my mind was elsewhere. I started thinking about guys again. I think that was one of the only things that kept me sane.. my love for other men. In all the shit our race went through, that was one of the best things that happened... that racial tensions were dropped.... sexual differences were dropped... you were what you wanted to be... and nobody judged you for it. It was different before the war, people who were "different" were on the outside. The human race wasn't impartial like now. And it's good that it is now cause I couldn't have dealt with such intolerence.
My mind continued to wander until I got back to my room. The ship was pretty cool about everyone having their own quarters. We weren't sure how long these tests were going to take, and it was always miserable sharing space with other people. I had been on ships before where people didn't seem to care too much if you if you were around while they were fucking around. I mean, sure when I'd see a guy and his boyfriend go to town, it was mildly amusing, but it just got down right disgusting when I'd have to watch a chick get nailed. Something just didn't seem right about it to me. Yea, I didn't have to watch... and most times I didn't... but it's always so much easier when you have your own place.
I laid back onto my bed. Thoughts of Davis wouldn't leave me. I had been without a guy in my life for quite some time. My last boyfriend was really upset that I wanted to be on this expedition. "There's nothing left on that rock," he would say. I found out I was going on this ride about a year and a half before it took place. We went through so much training to come out here. There was no telling what kind of conditions we'd find on the surface. My boyfriend couldn't handle the idea that I'd be away... and he felt that it was consuming my life. I guess it was...because I had to come back here. I just had to see Earth after the tragedy. My life revolved around it.
Our breakup was hard on me... but it hardened me to come to Earth. I had nothing else to lose at that point. He was the only thing in my life. Life now was quite a bit different than for the people on Earth. Humans were scattered all over the universe now 18 years later. We were "re-housed" right after the whole catastrophy in a planet not far out of our solar system that could susatin life... but it wasn't Earth. I barely remember the planet... but after seeing the pictures, I could think of nothing else...than to be back on its ground.... feeling the wind blow past me... and the grass beneath me. The feeling of the sun licking my face as the birds sailed across the sky. I remember that time vaguely. My boyfriend doesn't since he was four years younger than me on that day of fire.
I had fallen asleep at some point during those thoughts. I woke up to the blaring noise of the captain informing us that the first crew to the planet would be within the hour. I was a part of that crew. I don't quite know how I was picked since I was more of a historian than anything else, but I wasn't about to pass up this chance to see Earth again. The ship's councelor had warned us that being on the surface would be pretty hard for a few people since we didn't quite know what to expect. Our scans of the surface showed that buildings were still standing, but we couldn't get any reports about bodies. That was going to be the absolute hardest thing for me... to go back to the scene of the crime years after being hurdled into space.
I stripped down completely. I was going to jump into the shower quickly before going to the drop rig. I was trying to keep my mind off things when I heard the door open slightly with a small knock.
"Rhodes, you in here?"
It was Bryon Dunn. I could tell from his voice. This kid was amazing in looks as well as everything else he did. He had a talent for making my heart race no matter what he said. And this case was no different. I was standing there naked as he walked in. My heart wanted to beat out of my chest.
"Damn Rhodes, you're looking mighty fine today if I do say so myself."
I smiled meekly. I don't know what it was about him that drove me crazy, but I wanted to hide it. His shirt was off... and he was just beautiful. Dunn was 19, stood about 6'1", weighed around 150lbs, had light brown hair, green eyes, and was completely smooth (well from what I could tell). He wasn't hiding the fact that there was a bulge growing in his pants.
He walked up to me and kept giving me his million dollar smile.
"Dunn, you know exactly when to walk in here... why is that?"
"Because you're a beautiful boy, and I can just feel the heat when you're naked. Come here."
He pulled me up to him, and we kissed. At first it was a little bit of an apprehensive kiss, but then I realized who I was kissing....so I attacked him. I started rubbing my hardening dick up against his crotch. I knew that he was hard as hell from it. I wanted to pull off his clothes right there. Fuck the shower. I had a man with me now.
We kept kissing more and more passionately as I pushed myself onto Dunn. This was so unlike me, but he got all my juices flowing. Dunn had a way of doing that to me. I pushed him back up against the wall, and started licking down his chest. I could tell I was getting him off on this. I moved down and started licking his nipples. Dunn moaned out louder and louder ....
"What is going on in here?"
We both froze. I slowly turned around, and saw one of the others on the ship enter into the room. It was Eddy Kirkpatrick. He was smiling as he walked in.
"Fuck Eddy, why did you have to bother us like this?" Dunn asked.
"Nothing else better to do when you leave the door open. I also wanted to see what Rhodes would do to you. I'll have to remember some of that shit for this girl I know."
I blushed, and turned to get some clothes on. Eddy was a good guy and I really didn't mind being naked around him... He just never saw me attack like that. I guess everything kind of hit a climax for the day. I wanted so much to be held... and I knew this was an instantaneous gratification kind of thing... but when you're in the moment, you can justify anything.
"Well, next time I'll remember to close the door before I mount Dunn. I don't want to give away any family secrets, if you know what I'm saying," I said.
It was Dunn's turn to blush. He smiled shyly, and tried to hide it as best he could.
"Eddy, why don't you try out a guy for awhile. You know, take one of us out for a test spin," Dunn told him.
"Well, I've thought about it and all, but I really want a kid right now... and yea, I know it's totally possible to have a kid between two guys, but I like the whole old fashioned way I guess. I'm stuck on it, you know?" Eddy said shyly.
I could tell he did think about it, and Eddy wasn't that bad of a guy, but he was no Dunn... but he was a lot better than Davis. Eddy's attitude sold him, and I told him that often.
I slowly got dressed, half regretting that I didn't get inside Dunn's pants, but half glad as well. I really didn't want to degrade Dunn. I wanted everything between us to be legit, amazing, and totally long term. I think he knew that I felt that way, but it's hard to avoid fucking around when one of the two of you are naked.
After I got my jumpers on, we all left my room. Running down the hall, we horseplayed all the way over to the drop rig. I hadn't realized it, but those two were going with me on this trip. Dunn was a grunt... a military guy brought on by the Sarragot to watch over the rest of us... and as far as I was concerned, he could just watch over me! Eddy was an engineer. They weren't too sure how our equipment would respond to things while on the surface due to the high levels of radiation and all.
Funny but with those two going, that would mean that half our team was already together. There were only six of us going. You could bet that Davis would be the first pilot on the list. The people running the Sarrogat really loved that kid. Like I said earlier, his body was really good... just had to kill the attitude...but I guess if you did that, he would lose some of his pilot finesse. That meant that there were two others that would be going. I was anxious to know who those people would be.
We turned the corner and got to the drop rig room. This room is where we got our things all situated before entering the drop rig. The drop rig was just like a normal ship except it's main function was to go planetside. The room had the two other people already there. I didn't know either one of them.
"Hey guys, you seem to be just in time," the first person sarcastically commented.
"Rhodes, Dunn, Kirkpatrick.... good you guys could grace us with your presence. You all are a bit late, wouldn't you say?" It was the captain of the Sarrogat, Captain Ramsies. He was usually a pretty easy going guy, but I imagine from his look that things weren't going as planned. He continued. "Let me introduce you to the other two people that will be going down with you today. If you don't know yet, Davis will be handling the rig down there. This here is Grace Mandozi, a botanist that will be responsible for any plant life... that is ... if any is found. The last person going is Patrick Hankins, our video/audio specialist. He's going to make sure we document everything correctly. Hey, Rhodes, you listening?"
I blushed. Dunn laughed. Man, my mind wasn't with Captain Ramsies at all. This guy Patrick was hot in an alternative kind of way. He had spikey red hair, hazel eyes, looked to be about 5'10", probably weighed about the same as I did, and just looked good. I don't know what was up with me recently. I felt as though my dick was thinking for me lately.
"Sorry Captain," I said.
"Hankins, seems like you got an admirer. Rhodes is your historian. If you dig guys, seems like you'd be already a step in the right direction with him," Ramsies said.
I didn't know the Captain's motives there, but I continued to blush. Hankins actually didn't say a word. I wanted the attention off of me... so I spoke.
"Captain, what's the objective for today?"
"It's fairly simple today. We want you guys to check out some of the areas that we've been talking about over the last few weeks. We really need some firm readings to further evaluate what we can do. Command is anxiously awaiting our first drop report... so I want to make sure we cover all our bases. You guys launch in a few minutes. Get comfortable."
I got all my equipment together. I actually didn't have a whole lot to do since most of what I needed was stored on the portable computer display on my arm. And since I knew the area really well, there wasn't a lot for me to have to carry. We all settled into our chairs. The drop rig was a weird ship in most regards. We loaded into our chairs in what seemed like a normal room, and then the chairs were mechanically loaded into the rig. I don't know why they were set up that way, but anyhow, we finally all got loaded into the ship. Davis came over the loud speaker.
"All you pussies ready? Oh, pardon me Mandozi, I forgot you were already linked in with us."
"Just get us there Davis... and try not to kill us," Mandozi whined.
I liked her style. She didn't seem to take any shit. I looked over at Dunn who was sizing me up. It only made me blush more. Yea, just about every guy I ran into looked really fine to me, but Dunn just had something that the other didn't. He just knew the way into that deeper part of me... the part of me that was desperately looking for a boyfriend.... one to love... to hold... who took me seriously... my love for the Earth.
Launch was filled with anxiety. Davis got us out of the bay in no time flat, but that was the end of routine. Not but a few minutes after we left the hangar bay, then sirens screamed across the rig. I closed my eyes. I hadn't heard noises like that since the last time I was here. The rig slammed against something, and then spun out of control. Things flew all around where we were buckled in. I reached over to the remote pad on my armchair, and lit up the external console. The Sarrogat was spinning as well. What the fuck was going on?
"Davis, what the fuck just happened?!?" I screamed out.
"JUST HOLD ON RHODES!! WE'RE ALREADY CAUGHT IN A GRAVITATIONAL PULL OF THE PLANET. IF I DON'T MOVE US INTO POSITION, WE'LL NEVER MAKE IT!!! JUST HOLD ON!!" Davis screamed back.
I felt the ship shutter as he pulled us around. SLAM. The rig hit something again, and I felt us tumbling out of control. The external console flickered and died. I couldn't see what was going on out there. Davis was still with us though because the ship righted itself and thrusted forward. The engines whined as we shot down for the planet. I felt everything around me shaking constantly. We had to be getting through most of it... and finally everything got quiet. I could tell we were flying in the atmosphere of Earth.
Davis came back over the spearker, "Folks I'm going to try and land her as best as possible... but we're torn up pretty bad on the outside. A lot of our landing thrusters are either not functional or just ripped off. Brace yourself as much as possible."
I thought it was over, but the ship started to drop out of the sky. I closed my eyes again, and held on as tight as I could. I didn't know when we were going to hit but I wanted to be ready. SLAM! I felt us hit something again, but this time it felt like the ground. There was so much momentum that we started to roll over a couple of times. Things flew everywhere as we tumbled and tumbled. I felt so sick to my stomach. I wasn't sure I could take much more. The ship finally stopped in the right position, and we grinded to a stop. Everything was thrashed, and quite a few things looked broken.
After a few minutes of silence a door opened up, and Davis hobbled in.
"We've landed, but I don't suggest we leave this ship until we can figure out the conditions outside," Davis moaned out. He was hurt, but at least he was alive.
I looked around, and saw that everyone was moving around just a bit. I undid my belts, and stood up slowly. My legs were wobbly from the accident but I was ok. I looked around at the mess... and a cold realization hit me... I was so eager to come back here... and now it looks like we were going to be stuck here. All that I had thought about... all that I had wanted.... I got, and in such a way that I wasn't sure I was ready for.
Eddy started moving around more. He was pretty zoned out from the crash, so I helped him undo his harness. He sat there, and looked at the wreckage in the ship.
"Davis, what happened?" Eddy asked.
"It was all such a blur to be honest with you all. We left the Sarrogat's bay, and started in on our approach vector. I was lining up the nav computer for our initial burn when the collision alarms went off. There was nothing in front of us, but sure enough... we slammed into something... well, I think something more slammed into us. And from there, I tried to message the Sarrogat but I got nothing but static. Something was on the other side of her, I know it. It wasn't long before she started rocking out of orbit. I started to turn us somewhat when we were slammed again. We lost quite a few thrusters on that hit, so I routed the power to the back thrusters and tried to get us the hell out of there. Well, we're on the planet now... which is the good part... the bad part.... if something was attacking the Sarrogat, they'll be on us in no time."
My heart was racing. The idea that something was out there ... attacking... was just unheard of. The Eyrians educated us on the different species they had come in contact with, and the ones that were aggressive were nowhere near this planet. At least, they shouldn't have been close to this planet.
After awhile of orienting ourselves in the rig and making sure everyone was ok came the monumental task of trying to gather readings from outside. We didn't want to leave the ship until we were absolutely sure that we would be ok out there. I know that we were all anxious to get away from the ship if there really was something out there tracking us down. Nobody wanted to know if that really was the case.
Mandozi hooked a scanner to one of Hankins hover cam bots, and they sent it outside to explore. Seeing the wreckage of what happened so long ago made me shutter. It was hard to look at such destruction... such misery. The bot traveled around for a little while, and found very little traces of radiation in the area. That was really one of our only worries at the moment. We didn't want to be exposed too long to anything like that.
About an hour later, we slowly opened the door to the rig. Air rushed into the rig... and it brought back so many memories. We all had gotten used to the fabricators that the Eyrians developed. The air wasn't too much different, but enough to notice that we weren't breathing the fabricated stuff anymore.
Earth had changed so much since I had last seen her. The sky was not the blue that I had remembered of so long ago. It had a redish tint to it that was somewhat eerie, and most everything was covered in dirt. Believe it or not, there were a few plants growing in the area. Mandozi went straight for them. I turned around to get my first glimpse of the rig. I was in complete shock. It was hard to believe that we weren't dead after seeing what had been done to it. Eddy was already going over the system specs as Dunn walked up to me.
"How's it feel to be back here, Marc?"
"Bryon, I used to dream all the time about what it would be like to step back on Earth after her near complete destruction. Part of me wanted it to look like this garden paradise somehow, but I knew when we got back here we'd see something so much different. I just.... I don't know..."
I started crying right there on the spot. I sat on the ground as the emotions welled up inside me. Dunn walked closer to me, sat down, and put his arm around me as I kept crying. I couldn't shake it. This was such a beautiful world, and it was all pissed away because some people weren't all that happy... they decided the only way to be happy was to bomb... and look at what they gave us?
Davis walked out of the rig in a hurry. "Gang, get as much stuff as you can. I just got this strange feeling that the more time we spend around this rig, the faster we're going to run into something we don't want to see. Let's get all we can from the ship and move towards finding a more suitable place for the night."
He was right. We couldn't just sit around here with our thumbs up our asses. I wiped the tears from my eyes as Dunn still hugged me. This kid was amazing. Of all the responsibilities he had, he stayed next to me. I was falling in love. Dunn helped me up off the ground, and we went to retrieve as much as we could from the rig. We loaded some of our supplies on a couple of the hover cam bots, and carried the rest a couple of miles to what looked like a fairly stable building.
We climbed to the second floor of the building, and decided to set up camp. Our first task was to get ourselves settled in, and start surveying the area. The very next task was to try and piece together what we could to find out what happened to the Sarrogat.
Dunn and I walked off together after Mandozi, Eddy, Hankins, and Davis settled in the area. Dunn wanted to know the area better, and requested that someone go with him. I wanted to get away with him... so I agreed. Eddy laughed a little, but then got back to work. There was so much to get done before nightfall, and from our calculations... we had about 6 hours left of light.
It was a somewhat peaceful walk given the fact of everything that had happened so far this day. Every few steps we'd walk, I'd find something even more amazing than a few steps before. I had found a street sign, a few toys, and an old computer keyboard. It was strange to see all these things again. There was so much history here. After walking most of the area checking for any problems, we decided to sit down on a pile of rocks. We sat there for awhile in silence. Dunn had his gun out, cleaning it... and I was tossing rocks to pass the time. Neither one of us wanted to go back to the camp yet.
"Marc, did you ever wish you died in all of this years ago?" Bryon was curious.
"Yea, I did a few times. I wanted so much to be with my family, and not go through the hell our people have been through the past 18 years. Sometimes I think I would have been happy with not seeing Earth this way. I can't begin to tell you what it looked like, Bryon. Sure, it had its problems then... but look at this scarring... look at everything around us. It's going to take decades to get this place back to what it was. I don't even want to think of how many things on this planet died that day.. how many types of planets or animals that will never come back." My emotions were scattered once again.
Bryon pulled me close to himself, and held me as the sun slowly went down in the distance. I took a deep breath, and could smell him so clearly. I pulled away from him some, stared deep into his eyes, and leaned in to kiss. He was sweaty and dirty like me, but that made it even more amazing. We were together here on the surface of Earth, and even though we had no idea what kind of dangers could be around, we wanted each other. I pushed him more onto his back while still on the pile of rocks. I straddled Bryon, and passionately kissed him once more.
After a few minutes I broke the kiss, pulled back and took my shirt off. Dunn's heart was racing. "Marc, this is fuckin amazing dude. You're so... uggh... there aren't even words for what I'm feeling."
I smiled at him as I leaned back in and started licking his neck. The taste of Bryon's sweat was great. It drove me even more crazy. I could feel his cock grow inside his pants as I pushed up against him. I knew that I had to have him... and it had to be right now. I pulled off of him, reached down and undid his pants. I looked deep into his eyes as I slid off his pants and underwear. I slowly grabbed his dick as I moved in to kiss him. He was panting pretty hard, but I wouldn't let up. I moved down and licked the head of his manhood. Bryon cringed as I started playing with him. I tore off the rest of my clothes, spit into my hand and started rubbing his dick. I couldn't wait another second. I wanted Dunn inside me. His eyes lit up as I kissed him again. I don't think he was ready for this aggression but I couldn't wait. As I kissed him, I moved myself into position and felt his cockhead swell with anticipation and love. Since he was still laying back some, I straddled his waist and moved down on his cock. Even though I slicked his dick down a little, he was still a little dry. It wasn't the absolute best feeling as he sank in, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. He groaned out as I pushed all the way down. The feeling was incredible as I finally had my Dunn inside me. He was the man I had wanted for quite some time. This was the most romantic place to be... finally... back on Earth.... together as one. I kept moving up and down... and it got easier and easier.... so I knew that Dunn was getting more and more wet.
I couldn't control myself... faster and faster I moved... grunting louder and louder... feeling Dunn make love to my soul. I didn't know how long I could take it... feeling so much deep inside me. His love muscle pounding me... giving me his child. Faster and faster I went until Dunn surprised me and held me on him. He sat up, and held me close... carrying me. He was standing straight up and walking me with himself still deep inside me. He lowered me onto the ground, lifted my legs up, and worked it all over again. Bryon invaded all my senses... I could do nothing but feel him make love to every bit of me. His love moved deeper inside of me until I knew it was time. He didn't have to say much. His facial expressions were the only thing I needed. Dunn looked deep into my eyes... his soul touched mine... and he released all the passion he had. I held on tight, and without touching myself... I shot my love all between us.
Dunn finally pulled out of me and we laid there together for awhile. Neither of us wanted to say anything. It was a perfect moment. After what seemed like an eternity, we got up and got dressed. It was hard to think that we were actually on a mission sometimes. Well, I guess we were also pretty much stranded as well.
Dunn and I didn't really say much on the rest of the survey. It wasn't that either one of us felt weird... we were just so much in love. I could see it on his face, and I definitely felt it.
BOOM!
We both felt it. It wasn't too close but it was certainly a blast. We both ran as fast as possible back towards camp. When we got there, we couldn't see anyone. After running up inside the building, we both could see everyone huddled together.
"What happened," I asked frantically.
"Don't know. We heard the blast in the distance. I think it would be best if we all stay on alert tonight," quietly issued out Davis. He didn't want us to go too far... and truth be told, I didn't want to go out that far anyways. I was curious, but I also wasn't stupid.
I looked out the window and didn't hear a sound. It was so quiet, but that blast had been so loud. What could it have been? Were there others on the planet with us? Nobody could be sure. I laid down close to Dunn. I wanted him to hold me, but he was sitting up with his hand on his gun. It was the soldier in him. He wanted to protect us... and I'm sure deep down... he wanted to protect me.
I slowly drifted off to sleep. I had no idea what the next day had in store for us all.
