Mike Gains Weight!

Wow, it's been a while since I've written anything, but this summer was pretty much action-filled in one way or another. No, not physical exercise, let's not be crazy! I'm your basic couch potato, even though I spend most of my potatoing right here in front of the computer!

Anyway, since I've mostly managed to gain all this weight without much of a conscious effort (I do read with awe, though, the stories of thin guys who are trying like crazy to gain weight, who have to work hard to get from a thin 150 pounds to 300 pounds or more, though! I guess the grass is always greener ;D), I've never really considered myself a "gainer" in the classical sense. Sure, I've gained (and even temporarily lost) hundreds of pounds in my life, but it's never been part of a plan to get from 200 to 300 in a month, year, decade, whatever. For most of my life, it's been more like dieting like crazy to get into a 38" waist pair of jeans, only to wear them once or twice, and in a month find I've gained 15 pounds and can't even button the pair of 40" inch jeans. I was rummaging around recently and found pants with a 38" waist and a 46" waist, both brand new and both with the size tags still attached. I guess I waited a week or two before trying to wear them, and it was too late. Don't kid yourself, I most likely also have pairs of 40", 42" and 44" inch pants too :)

So, where is this going, right? Well, as I've said, I've never been what I really consider to be a gainer, but I'm hardly the opposite, either.... (by the way, is the opposite of a gainer a LOSER? I guess that depends on one's outlook ;D). Anyway, back at the ranch, I've been taking some medication for a while now, all of which is designed to get me some more energy. For the most part, it's worked! One of the totally UNintended side effects was that I was also losing a bit of weight. At first it didn't seem like much, and face it, at my weight, whatever it is, a few pounds one way or another isn't exactly noticed! However, as the summer wore on, I realized that my 64" pants were getting WAY too large, the 62" inch jeans were a bit snug but comfortable, and I was finally able to button the 60" jeans AND continue breathing ;) Now, I don't have ANY clue how much I weigh other than I pin my doctor's scale, which goes up to 350. I had imagined that I was weighing around 380, maybe lost down to 365 or so, but those are just guesses....

OK, REALLY, there is a point to all of this, and it's not the fact that for once in my life I've lost weight without trying! I'm writing this while the Halloween season is in full swing, and by that I mean all the TONS of candy on sale in the supermarkets. The supermarket I usually patronize has a relatively uninspiring (and expensive!) candy aisle, so I generally bypass it and find my calories elsewhere... except when the Halloween candy appears! Well, one of my all time favorites are Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, oh, wow, I could eat them all day, every day! As it turns out, they aren't all that terribly expensive this year, and for once I can feel "justified" in buying several bags of them at a time, because after all, it IS Halloween, and I'm sure 7,000 kids will be at my door... yeah, right. But if I only buy 3 or 4 bags of them at a time (24 to a bag), it just looks like I'm buying for Halloween, and the store is large enough that I'm not likely to run into the same cashier often enough so they'll remember what I bought (like I really think they care, ya know? :D). Suffice it to say that for a couple of weeks now one of my nighttime snacks has been a "serving" of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. In case you're wondering, a "serving" is a bag of 24 :)

As if that wasn't enough, everything pumpkin is also on sale, including wonderful pumpkin breads and the most delicious pumpkin pudding cakes. Well, last time around I had to buy a couple of each, and since they're freshly baked, they don't last that long. I had to make sure they wouldn't go to waste (but wow, they sure went to waist!), so breakfast was at least half of one of those babies!

Not to be outdone, the deli counter had some great stuff on sale and I certainly didn't want that department to feel slighted. So, dinner the last several nights has been overstuffed deli sandwiches. Oh, and let's not forget the french fries :)

The point of all this? Well, it really did mostly sneak up on me, but all of a sudden I realized that my pants and shirts were getting very VERY tight! Matter of fact, the bottom button of my shirt now gaps a bit, and there used to be plenty of room there! There is now a HUGE roll over the belt on my 62" jeans, which really had become rather loose. Forget the 60" jeans... I can button them, but I really can't breathe too well in them anymore, and if I just let them fit naturally around me, there's a good 2 to 3 inch gap there! I've always had a real hanging kind of stomach, not a beer belly at all, but wow, it looks bigger, hangs lower, and feels heavier than I ever remember it!

I never understood gaining, though I know I have some encourager tendencies in me (that's a story for another day!), but I have to say it feels pretty good! I don't know how long this will last, or if it's just a Halloween type thing, but wow, here's what I looked like the other day... I think you will be able to see that I've gained some serious weight. I showed this picture to a friend online, and he thinks I've gained quite a lot, too. What do you think? Please let me know! Please send mail or sign my guest book to let me know! Thanks :D

Mike's a blimp!

I know this isn't the clearest picture in the world, but I forgot to use the flash and artifically lightened it with a graphics program. In any case, I think it's pretty clear that the roll above the waist is, well, BIG ;)
