chapter one

"Shane and myself had grown quite close since we were sharing a flat in Sligo, to close some people would say, because I had found myself falling in love with him even though we had known each other since the age of nine and I knew practically every intimate detail about him.

But there comes a point in any friendship when you either carry on or forget the whole thing. So when I found Shane with another woman I knew it had come to the end of our friendship, I had to call it a day, even if it meant hurting the one person I ever really loved. It was even harder trying to explain to him the real reason why I was leaving...

"Shane, Shane where are ya?" I shouted as I walked round the local park trying to find Shane who had decided that I should freeze trying to find him. I decided that if I ever found him I would give him a severe telling off. I know what you're thinking, 'Why is she looking for him anyway?'

Well, I'm looking for him because he said that he'd meet me in the park so that we could go down the local pub for a drink and chat. It was beginning to get dark and so I decided to forget about Shane and go back to the flat, hoping that he would be there by the time I got in.

As I was walking up the road, I heard a familiar voice coming from behind me. I turned to see Shane walking down the road holding someone's hand. I couldn't see who it was so I just assumed that it was one of his three sisters' coming over for a chat, as he never talked about having a girlfriend.

I got inside and closed the door, went into the kitchen and put the kettle on. As it was boiling, I heard the door open and Shane came in, as he closed the door he was talking to someone whose voice I didn't recognise.

I decided to continue to make the tea, but that I should first go and say 'Hello', so as not to appear rude. Shane hadn't realised that I had got in and so went into the living room with the person's whose name I now knew to be Rachel.

Just as I was about to go in there I heard Rachel say, "Shane, when are you going to tell Caitlin to move out?" "Soon, I need to pick the right time to tell her."

On hearing this, I decided to walk in and ask the question, " Yeah, when were you gonna tell me, eh?" "Caitlin, I didn't realise you were in." Shane says in a state of shock. "Obviously. Well, when were you gonna tell me?? On second thoughts, don't answer that, it'd just be better if I left you and your girlfriend here to what you were doing before you were interrupted. Just don't expect to see me again, ever. Alright?" I say as I leave.

"Caitlin? Wait, come back, don't go please, I can explain." Shane shouts after me as I leave slamming the front door as I do.

"Thanks for that Rachel. That's all I needed isn't it?" Shane replies getting angry. "What? What'd I do?" "Everything. You've ruined everything. I think it would just be better if you left me alone, don't you?" He says.

"Oh come on Shane, don't talk like that," Rachel says as she goes over to him. "Don't even talk to me Rachel, just leave will ya?" "Fine. If that's what you want." "Yeah, that's exactly what I want." Shane answers as Rachel leaves the flat.
