if I let you go (2)

chapter seven

"Shane, will you get over it?! All I keep hearing day and night, Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. She's not interested or she would have phoned you!" Kian was beginning to get impatient with Shane who insisted on driving to Rachel's house as soon as they got back to Dublin. "Remind me not to share a hotel room with you next time you fall in love."
"She might have lost my number," Shane suggested as he pulled up.
"You're clutching at straws, my friend," Kian climbed out of the car with him. Leaning on the car he said "Go and knock them."
"Yeah, yeah, don't rush me."
"I wanna get home this week Shane."
"Okay," Shane walked up to the door and knocked but nobody answered.
"She's probably at work, I'll try again later."
"Yeah, or, she saw you and ran a mile cos she just ain't interested. I mean, do you think a beautiful girl like that doesn't have a boyfriend?...."
Kian trailed off as an old man with a white beard slowly opened the door.
"Unless I'm mistaken, that isn't how I remember her."
Shane ignored him: "Hi, is Rachel there?" he asked.
"No. Rachel doesn't live here anymore."
"Oh. Um, do you know where she lives now? Do you have an address?"
"London. That's all I know," and the old man shut the door again.
"London!" Shane thumped the car with his fist. "Damn, I'm gonna have to wait till we go back to England now."
"Come on Shane. Be serious. It'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Let's just go home and you can think about it."
