Life of Bryan

chapter fourteen

The McFadden's sat, squashed together on their huge sofa, while Sarah sat across from them on a single seated sofa chair. They were all very quiet and it was getting dark outside.

They'd spent the whole afternoon chatting, Sarah had enjoyed a wonderful dinner that Bryan's mother Mairead had prepared and now they'd run out of topics to talk about. No one knew where Bryan had gone. They'd called him on his phone and Eddie had once again gone round to his house but there was no reply.

Sarah was quite upset, afraid he'd gone off her. Mairead was worried but determined he was ok. Brendan was disappointed in his son's behaviour. Sarah seemed like a really nice, polite, young lady and Bryan hadn't even had the decency to turn up to say hello.

Bryan however was in bed. He had spent most of the afternoon either in tears or thinking very hard about everything that had happened. Surprisingly though Sarah hadn't entered his head or the fact that she was actually IN Dublin at that moment.

Finally Bryan thought to himself "I'd better call Sarah and tell her what really happened." It was then that it dawned on him that Sarah had flown over that morning and he'd completely forgotten about it.

He jumped up off his bed and pulled his shoes on. Rushing down the stairs he grabbed his wallet and his car keys. Practically jumping into his Land rover Bryan's head was spinning with worry. He'd really blown it this time. "What must she be thinking?!" he thought to himself.

As he drove over to his parents house, which wasn't too far away, Bryan wondered how he could make this situation right. He passed a petrol station and then reversed into it. "It can't make everything alright," he thought "but I'll try and say sorry with the biggest box of chocolates they have."

Sarah brushed her teeth in front of the mirror in the McFadden's bathroom. Although it was only about 9 o'clock in the evening she was exhausted. She had decided to get ready for bed and wait up in Susan's room just in case Bryan decided to show.

Downstairs Susan was saying her goodbyes to her parents while her best mate waited at the door for her to leave for their trip. "Is she alright?" Susan asked her parents, about Sarah. "She's probably a bit upset, and I don't blame her" Brendan replied "Bryan's going to be in deep trouble when he finally shows his face."

And as if on cue, Bryan's car pulled up in front of the house. He jumped out of the car and ran up the front path, pushing past Susan's friend. Whacking her accidentally round the head with his HUGE box of chocolates. Brendan frowned and Mairead grabbed his arm as he tried to run straight into the living room. "Oh no you don't!" Mairead said sternly. "What time do you call this?" Brendan asked.

Susan smirked, giving her brother a quick hug she whispered in his ear so their parents couldn't hear "I wish I was staying to hear what's going to happen to you, you're such a plum!". Bryan sighed and Susan kissed his cheek before saying her farewells again and leaving with her friend.

Mairead led Bryan, although it was more like dragged in his opinion, into the living room. She sat him down and shook her head. Brendan sat down in his own personal chair, which no one else was allowed to sit in unless Brendan was not around.

"That poor girl came all the way from London to see you. She barely knows you anyway which has probably made her even more nervous and instead of trying to make her feel welcome you don't even show up to meet her at the airport!" Mairead told him frowning.

Bryan stared down at his feet, ashamed, "Who picked her up?" he asked. "Eddie" Brendan muttered. Bryan was surprised, "what was he doing there?" he asked. "Something YOU should have been doing!" Mairead snapped, "How could you forget she was there? I can't believe you did it deliberately".

Bryan shrugged his shoulders, he didn't have an answer and that was the truth. He couldn't understand it himself. Mairead gently smacked his shoulder, "Well get upstairs and apologise to her!"

Sarah was lying on her front on Susan's bed. She liked Susan, she was nice and friendly. Her room had posters of blokes Sarah didn't particularly like but Susan had told her she could take them down until she got back if she liked. Sarah of course thought it would be incredibly rude to do that to someone else's room and told her she didn't mind at all.

Sarah was looking through Susan's photo album. Susan had deliberately left it out for Sarah to have a look at. Sarah enjoyed seeing the McFadden's over the different years. There were funny photos and sweet ones too.

There was one of the family taken outside a mansion. Bryan was in tears and it was an odd photo because of that reason. Everyone else was smiling and Bryan's parents were acting as though they were trying to ignore their red faced son. The mansion looked familiar and on the label underneath it, it said 'Windslow House, Yorkshire 1986'.
