moments - chapter one

She was dreaming again, she knew it would eventually lead her into major trouble, but she couldn't help it. The teacher’s voice came to her as from a large distance, as if she was in a totally different place instead of three feet away.

"ESTHER, would you PLEASE pay attention?? It's the third time already, I wonder where your thoughts are now!" Esther grinned, thinking the answer but not saying it out loud. "I'm very sorry Mrs Tingle, I'll try to pay attention." Esther knew she wasn't going to pay any attention, not today. She was much too excited now that he was finally going to pick her up at school.

She looked round to the other students in the class and tried to imagine their faces as they would see the two of them together! Esther had begged him to come and pick her up today. "PLEASE Kian won't you just come over? I'd really love that! Pretty please???" She started laughing when she thought back at the whining and the begging. Of course she understood why Kian wasn't too fond of picking her up at the school gate, but she pretended not to...

"Esther, could you do exercise 4 please?" She let out a deep sigh, thinking she should get out of the room, but instead she started reading. Luckily for her she didn't make any mistakes. Mrs Tingle watched the girl’s face and then concluded there must be something very special at hand. "She's never so absent in class... I wonder..."

Finally the school bell rang, giving the sign to the students that the weekend began. The usual ritual of the goodbyes began, but Esther didn't even notice it. Not that she did otherwise, she was left out even before she had made the mistake of telling everyone about her and Kian, but now she rushed the class out, leaving everyone wondering what was wrong with her. "Goodbye Mrs Tingle, have a nice weekend!!" she shouted down the hall. Emma Tingle smiled thinking to herself that it was a good thing she hadn't bothered her too much.

Outside, Esther started running towards the gate. She just couldn't wait another minute to hold Kian in her arms and to kiss him. Behind her, the others started to catch up with her. "Esther, having a date with your boyfriend, what was his name again?" Esther felt a little twitch of anger in-between the happy thoughts she had had. She started to run even faster, taking her own breath away. She looked round and saw the others were still closing in on her. But she was almost at the gate, and then... She felt a hard push in her back, and was unable to keep her balance.

With a hard slap she fell on the ground, passed by her schoolmates. She wondered what she had done wrong to those girls. It had been that way since day one, actually from the moment they had all met. The teacher had asked every one what their hobbies were, and she had said "Westlife, Westlife, Westlife and Westlife" It was true, she only had one hobby. The teacher started to ask who Westlife were and stuff, but the others started laughing, saying things she couldn't hear. The only word she understood was "child". The day after that the other girls had started to push her down, and even to tear up Westlife stuff they found in her diary.

As she stumbled back on her feet she saw the necklace Kian had bought her for her anniversary was broken. "SHIT!" Esther picked the broken jewel up and walked on. From all her happy feelings was not much left anymore. As she took the final curb she saw Kian standing at the gates. Thank God he wasn't late! Esther accelerated her steps, trying to keep herself from falling a second time in the mud. He was signing something for a girl she saw.

Just as she reached the gate he turned round at her and smiled. "Hey Essie, how’s it going today?" Esther smiled at him. "A little slippery but the rest is okay!" Kian's eyes twinkled as he started to walk towards her. "Looks like you've already fallen on your way here." Esther stopped to take a look at her clothes. "Yeah, I guess I made a mess of myself"

A little further she saw her classmates looking at her and Kian. They were about to get the show of a lifetime. "Careful now, don't loose your balance!" She saw it coming too late to stop him. Kian’s push made her fall a second time. Lying face down in the mud she could hear the distant laughter of the others. They had a show alright... Kian started laughing at her as well now, friendly however, as he would never hurt her by laughing at her.

Esther got up and started to walk away, leaving Kian laughing still. She started to cry, not because of Kian, but... why actually? She didn't know. She could hear Kian shout her name. "Let him shout!" she thought to herself as she started running away from him. Kian came after her, and caught up with her soon after. "Hey, what was it? I was just teasing ya!" He stopped and saw her tears. "Hey girl, don't cry now! It was just for fun! I didn't..."

She fled in his arms, holding him as tight as she could. "It's not you, it's just... I don't know what is wrong with me lately!" Kian held her close. "Maybe I can help, tell me what it is... and I'll fix it for ya." She smiled at him. "I've just missed you so very much that I hoped you would kiss me instead of push me." Kian rolled his eyes "Djeez, do you think I'm going to believe that? I'm flattered though, but..naah!" Behind him he could hear the girls comment on them. "Look, Beauty and Esther the beast!!!"

He looked back at Esther and saw she had turned her face away from him. "Is that it?" he already knew the answer. Over the last week she had called him several times to tell the school stories. "I'll handle this! Let me!" As they walked past the group of girls he smiled at them. "Hi girls!"

The comments weren't too far off "OOOHHH, he is a beauty!!!" Kian smiled at Esther "But not for them..." He stopped at the car, and pulled her closer in his arms. "What would I do without you?" Kian smiled at her. "You would feel a bit lonely I guess..." His face moved closer towards her, and their kiss was enough to give the spectators the spectacle Esther had hoped for...
