shane's story

shane’s story – chapter ten

Kieran grew well and good. He was a healthy little boy; he cope with his early arrival really well. He stayed totally clear of the problems premature babies often had.
Shane had taken time off from the band, which everybody understood, and sympathy letters and cards poured in from fans all over the world every day. He spent almost all his time in the hospital. So did Nana.

In august Kieran was big enough and healthy enough to be discharged, and the second Sunday in August, he was christened in the church close to Shane's parents' place.
Nana was home for the weekend, and though being weak, she was able to hold her son and give him his name.

The next morning she was back in hospital. Life was running out fast now. Shane and the baby was there with her all the time, but she slept the most of the time. She was getting strong medicine to keep her from the worst pain.

Shane was lying on his back in Nana's bed. Kieran was sleeping between them. They were holding hands, like they did when they fell in love. Playing around with their fingers.
Nana was chit-chatting, high and fearless because of the medicine. She was full of jokes and funny things to say.
Shane felt it to be very tragic-comic. He couldn't help laughing over some of it, and at the same time he felt so bad for laughing…it was a really weird situation for him to be in.

After an hour of playing jester, she grew tired though. Shane felt her get tired.
"Do you think we should sleep a little, Nana?"
Nana nodded. "I'm so tired…"
"So am I." Shane moved around so he could hold his one arm around Nana, and the other one close to Kieran, so he wouldn't move to far away if he woke up. "Sleep well, Nana. I love you," Shane whispered and kissed her cheek.
Nana smiled a bit. "I love you too. And Kieran…" She touched the little boy and put her hand at rest on his leg.
Shane watched her a bit while she fell asleep. Then he closed his eyes to have a nap too.

How long he slept he didn't know, but suddenly he felt like someone was hugging him tight and kissing the site of his neck, the way he loved it and only Nana could do it.
The next second Kieran started crying unhappily.
Shane didn't react on it at first, he was still in his sleep, but then he realised that Kieran's cry was different, and that Nana wasn't reacting to it. He opened his eyes and just by seeing her, he knew she wasn't there any longer. He also knew that it had been her leaving when she kissed and hugged him; and also Kieran's new cry was her doing. He closed his eyes and buried his face next to her neck and cried.

4 days later:

Shane felt his heart ripped out as he stood there, watching Nana's coffin being lowered into the ground.
Nana's parents had tried fighting this, they wanted her back in Denmark, but as her husband, Shane legally had the final word, and he wanted to fulfil her wish; to let her stay here, near Kieran and him.
He didn't hear anything of what was said or what went on around him. The only thing he heard, was the constant loud noise that kept thundering through his head. He knew that reporters and photographers were following this, but he didn't care. They left him alone, apart from the condolences. Questions and other things they contacted Nicky and the others for. Now it was only he and Kieran left to try and make a life out of it.
