the guy in the towel

chapter four

‘…and Shane. Yes.’

We sat and talked for a couple of hours. Then Shane started talking about going back to his room.

‘I’m tired. If I’m going to get anything done tomorrow I’d better get some sleep. Are you coming too Mark?’

‘Donno. Are you going to bed Anna? If you want to I’ll sit here with you a while longer.’

‘Actually, I think I'm going to go for a walk, it’s a wonderful summer’s night. But go with Shane Mark if you want. I know you have to work tomorrow so don't stay on my account.’

‘OK, goodnight then Anna. It’s been a pleasure meeting you. Perhaps we’ll see each other again?’

‘I'm sure we will, Shane. I’ve also enjoyed tonight very much.’ I gave him a hug. As I was turning to hug Mark he said:

‘You shouldn’t walk by yourself in the middle of the night. I’ll walk with you, it’s good with some fresh air.’

‘Thanks Mark, it’s really nice of you, but really, you don’t have to.’

‘I know. But I want to.’

Shane went to his room and Mark and I went out. We walked around and after a while we sat down on a bench under a big tree by the water. I leaned against him and for a couple of minutes we just sat there together.

‘It’s beautiful here isn’t it? Mark said.

‘Yeah’, I said and shivered a little.

‘Are you cold? Come here, I’ll make you warm again.’ He said and put his arm around me.

It felt nice. It felt like I belonged there, like I had found my way home. Mark looked me in the eye and his face came nearer and nearer mine. He kissed me gently. Then he pulled away.

‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. Can you forgive me?’

‘There’s nothing to forgive’ I said and kissed him. He kissed me back and….

I lost my self in the memory of his kiss.

‘Is that all I’m getting? Jenny said and snapped me out of it.

‘Yes, but it’s not much more to tell really. We went back to the hotel and then I slept till you came back.’

‘Right, she said doubtfully. But if that’s the way you want it. By the way, don’t tell anybody about me and Bry. I don’t know where this thing heading or even if it is a thing and I don’t want them all to tease us about it all the time.’

‘Of course I won’t tell anybody. But you’ll have to promise that you won’t tell either. Mark and I agreed about it before we parted last night. We also want to figure this thing out before we tell anybody.’

‘It’s a deal then.’

‘It’s a deal.’
