the competition that offered a bigger price than anyone knew - chapter two

Anna was sitting on a sofa in the Smash Hits office, talking to John, the editor, who was waffling on about how down to earth Westlife were. How nice they were to be around. But Anna was only half listening. She had her eyes on Kian, sitting over in the corner with Shane doing their last magazine interview. He really was gorgeous. And so sweet too. She couldn’t believe she was actually talking to him, like friends or something. She wanted it to be something though, something more. Anna was falling for Kian, just as fast as he was falling for her. If only they knew how each other felt.

‘What d’you think Anna? Anna? ANNA!’ John was waving his hand around in front of her face. ‘What?! Sorry! What were you saying? Sorry, I was miles away.’ ‘I noticed! I was asking if you minded us sending a photographer along with you and the guys for the rest of the day.’

‘Yeah, I guess. I mean, that’s fine with me. You’d better ask the guys too though. And if one of us wants you to disappear for a bit, will you? I doubt we will, but just in case.’ ‘Of course. Why, have you got something planned?’ John smiled, cheekily.

‘Like what? No, no, no. Nothing planned. Just in case we want to have a rest or something. I’m shattered already, and it isn’t lunchtime yet! I don’t know how these guys do this everyday. And Kian said this was a quiet day for them!’ ‘I know. They’re mad, but no matter how much they complain, they love it really.’

Shane came over. ‘We’re finished you two. So finish your chat. We’ve booked a lunch table in about 15 minutes, so we’ll have to rush.’ John stood up. ‘Shane, would you mind if we sent along a photographer for today? Sort of for a competition winner thing?’

Shane instantly thought of Kian. Somehow he didn’t think he’d go for that idea, especially today with Anna around. ‘I’d rather not John. It’d be nice to have a day when there aren’t cameras following us. Anyway, Anna’s got her camera with her, surely if you do a feature you can use some of those piccies?’ ‘Yeah, I s’pose.’ John looked disappointed, but he had long discovered that Shane always had his reasons, and that it wasn’t wise to argue with him.

Shane, Kian and Anna left the offices and walked round the corner to the restaurant. Bry, Nicky and Mark had taken the car with them, but the restaurant was only around the corner, so they’d said they’d meet them there. A group of girls came rushing across the road, yelling at Shane and Ki’. Anna gasped as they ran up and hugged them. She took a step back, and watched, feeling very awkward.

‘A’right gals?’ Kian seemed so chilled and Anna admired the way he handled them. ‘Are yous coming to the concert tonight?’ Shane asked whilst signing autographs. ‘Yeah, that’s why we’re in London. We were coming down for the concert and decided to do some early Christmas shopping whilst we’re here. We’re on half term y’see.’ The girl who was speaking seemed to be the only one calm enough to string a sentence together. The rest of them just shoved pieces of paper in their faces and said ‘Oh my God’ a lot. ‘It must be weird to have people hysterical over you’ thought Anna.

‘Sorry about that Anna’ said Shane, once the girls had left after 10 minutes of autographs and pictures. ‘That’s okay. They all seemed so pleased. Is it not weird that you can make someone so happy just by scribbling on a piece of paper?’ ‘I’ve never thought of it like that before. I guess, but we’ve got as used to it as we can now.’ Shane was talkative, but Kian hadn’t said a word.

‘Kian, are you okay?’ Anna spoke quietly. She was so shy to talk to him now that she’d realised just how much she liked him. ‘Yeah. Look, Anna, can we talk? Privately? Do you mind if we miss the lunch?’

‘No, I guess not. Shane, you don’t mind do you?’ Anna was very nervous, and half-wishing that he did mind. She was scared to be alone with Kian. ‘No. I’ll tell the guys you wanted to go somewhere quieter. Can you make your way to the Beeb afterwards?’

‘Yeah, we’ll get a cab or something.’ Kian seemed keen to get rid of Shane now that he’d made up his mind to talk to Anna.

After walking in silence through a park for over 15 minutes, Kian grabbed Anna’s arm and kissed her, full on the mouth. At first she tried to wriggle away, but then she kissed him back. It seemed to last forever.

‘I’ve been wanting to do that since you answered the door this morning’ Kian said by means of an explanation, after they pulled away from each other. Anna sat down on a nearby bench. ‘So, you meant what you said in the car? About not fancying a fan until then?’

‘Oh yeah. Anna you’re beautiful. But not just on the surface, you’re a beautiful person. And that’s what scares me. How perfect you seem. I spent all today trying to find something wrong with you, but I realised whilst we were doing the last interview, that you are just perfect, in my eyes anyway.’

‘Kian....how can you say that? I’m not perfect! No one is.’ ‘Shhh, let me say what I’ve got to say. I always said I didn’t believe in love at first sight, but now, now, I’m not so sure. Anna, I’m falling in love with you, and it scares me, but I don’t want to stop it happening, because I feels more right than anything else I’ve ever done. Please, just tell me that you won’t tell anyone if you don’t feel the same way. I didn’t want to tell you, but I didn’t want t spend the rest of my life thinking ‘what if?’.’

‘What do you mean if I don’t feel the same? Kian, I’m mad about you. I’ve been obsessed by you for 4 years, but that was purely physical, but now, after just this morning, I’ve realised that you’re so much more than that. You’re so deep, and sincere. People always brand you as a male bimbo, and that must hurt you so much, because you’re not. Nothing like. Kian, I’m falling in love with you too, and I’ll bet it scares me just as much as it scares you!’

Anna and Kian kissed again, for even longer this time, and with more feeling than either of them had ever experienced before.
