Dreams Really Do Come True
By Anna Hadland

When we dream why does it always seem so real? He thought. It’s your brain’s way of making you depressed when you dream of something and you wake up and know that you can’t have it. Dreams are supposed to come true aren’t they? Or are these the wrong kind of dreams? Tears spilled from his eyes as he sat up and hugged his duvet around him. He had dreamed of them both. His cousin who had been killed in a car accident just two weeks before and the girl he had met in England. Her long shiny brown hair and brown eyes first attracted him to her. Then after a week he had grown to really love her but he knew she couldn’t have him. She was one of his best friend’s cousin’s best friends and with her in one country and him in another things were not going to work out so he left for home with a broken heart. Nicky was in a band with four other lads. They had only just started out and while the other four were in England promoting their first single Nicky was back home in Dublin, Ireland. He was going to join the others later when he was ready to go back. Nicky was close to his cousin and was devastated that he was not with him when he had dies in hospital a few hours after the accident. He had tried to get home as soon as he could but the flight ended up being delayed. He had dreamed of both his cousin and the girl for the last two weeks. Each dream was similar. All three of them would be happy and laughing and when he woke up he would be alone and unhappy.

A month after his cousin’s funeral Nicky went to join the band in the UK. It was only three weeks until their first single would be released. Nicky couldn’t concentrate on singing very well. All he could think about was his cousin and the girl. Then at night when they went back to their hotels he would dream about them again. Each morning he hated himself for waking up to a new day without them. Then Bryan said something the third morning he joined them. “My cousin is coming with us for a week and she’s bringing her friend too.” Nicky looked up at Bryan who was smiling at him. Bryan knew how he felt about the girl and had told him not to worry. It was just they two at the table after breakfast. “If it was meant to be it will all work out in the end. If it’s not love then let it be and stop thinking about her,” Bryan had said. It was easier said then done. Bryan didn’t know about the dreams he was having. The girls were arriving on Saturday while they were going to be on a Saturday show. It was two days away and Nicky couldn’t stop thinking about it. On Friday night Nicky had a most vivid dream.

He was with the girl and she was wearing a lovely white dress. It looked like it was made of silk and she had small white flowers in her hair. Nicky looked down to find himself dressed in a grey suit. He was stood on a piece of grass. He looked up and saw the girl smiling, walking towards him. He smiled back at her as she came closer to him with each step that she took. He saw something move to his left and looked. His cousin was stood next to him in the same style suit that he had on. He smiled at Nicky so Nicky smiled back then turned his attention towards the girl. She was right next to him now and all he wanted was to feel her touch. The same touch that used to send chills down his spine. The same touch that made his stomach tie in knots. He held out his hand toward her and she held hers out to take it.

“Damn!” Nicky yelled as he woke up. The curtains were open and the first few rays of the morning sun were just beaming down onto the world. Nicky lay watching the sun until it was up and shining as bright as it could. Still thinking about his dream. That dream was different to the ones he had had before. He had to do something about these dreams. He longed for both his cousin and the girl. They seemed to be the only two people right now who could make him happy. His heart felt empty without them. He knew he could never have his cousin back no matter how much he wanted him.

That afternoon after the show the five lads made their way to the two cars waiting for them to take them to their hotel in the next city. The hour drive felt uncomfortable for Nicky. He felt sick at the thought of coming face to face with this girl after all his dreams. He remembered the day they had first met. Something between them clicked instantly. They had gotten along brilliantly and within the short time they had together they both learnt nearly everything about each other. Nicky thought there wasn’t much she didn’t know about him and when they had to go their separate ways Nicky’s heart broke. Nicky didn’t find out her phone number and Bryan’s cousin had been abroad for three months. Eventually they were at their hotel. The got into the foyer and Bryan spotted his cousin.
“Hollie!” he yelled and ran over to her. He hugged her and then dragged her away from the counter in the foyer where she was getting her room key. Nicky spotted her. She was at first next to Hollie but now she was sitting down in some sofas near the door with Bryan he could see her clearly. She was just as beautiful as ever. Nicky stared at her while the other lads checked in and went to their rooms. Nicky walked over to her.
“Hi Anna,” he said. She smiled at him.
“Hi, how you doing?” she replied. “I’m sorry about your cousin.”
“I’m alright thanks. What about you?”
“Can we go somewhere else to talk?” she asked him.
“Yeah we can go to my room if you want.”

They both walked in silence to his room after Nicky had checked in. They sat down next to each other on the huge double bed. They sat in silence for a few minutes before Anna finally spoke.
“I’ve really missed you,” she admitted. Nicky looked at her with a shiny glint in his eyes.
“I’ve missed you too,” he said. “Over the last few months I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. Even though I haven’t seen you or spoken to you I think I’m in love with you.”
Anna looked at him. “I really like you too Nicky but if anything happened what chance is there of it working properly? You’re working in a different country every day. When you have time off you’ll be in Dublin. I’ll have plenty of time for you but you won’t have much time for me. Do you really think that would work?”
“It can if we really try,” Nicky replied. “Can we have a go? Please?” Nicky’s bright blue eyes shone expectantly and Anna couldn’t resist staring into them. She kissed him lightly on the lips then looked back up into his eyes. Nicky leaned forward and kissed her back with more passion.

After two years things were still going strong between them. Nicky would try and see Anna whenever he was near and he would fly her out to him whenever she had some time off. Eventually Nicky asked her to marry him and naturally she said yes. Their wedding was set for a year later and everything was nearly perfect. There was just one thing that would make it completely perfect. Nicky stood in the church. He had his two best friends as his best men. He couldn’t decide between them. As the music started Nicky turned round to look at the door. He stared at the person walking down the aisle in front of him. Her dress nearly matched the one in his dream nearly three years ago. But in real life she looked even more beautiful as she walked towards him. Nicky closed his eyes for a few seconds and thought about his cousin who he wished so much for to be here. A light breeze blew past his face. Nicky thought nothing of it, as it was a draughty church anyway. Nicky held out his hand and Anna took it. This is real, he thought. A dream wouldn’t make me feel as happy as this. Nicky thought about his cousin most of the way through the service and afterwards they had their photos taken outside.

Two weeks later after they had come back from their honeymoon in the Caribbean they stepped foot into their home. They had brought it just before they had gotten married. It was a house big enough for them to live in comfortably. It was in the Dublin countryside with acres of land around it. They went out into their back garden where the birds were singing softly in the evening breeze. “My mum had dropped these by,” Nicky said holding a little folder as they both sat down on the grass. It was their wedding pictures. In every picture both Nicky and Anna were smiling. And Anna also noticed something in every picture. Behind Nicky there was always a small gold light just next to him. Anna pointed it out but at first Nicky thought it was just the sun. But that same gold light was next to him in every picture, including the ones at their reception later that night. Nicky smiled. Maybe it was perfect after all, he thought. Dreams really do come true. Just not in the way you expect them. Nicky kissed Anna then they went back inside. Just as Nicky closed the door another slight breeze blew past him. He heard the breeze whisper: I’ll always be here.
