BACK Our last goodbye by Laura

Baby don’t cry
Open your eyes

Shane lay against the sofa with Natalie, his girlfriend for a year and his best friend since he was 6 sitting next to him.
“Natalie, we can’t go on like this”
“What? What do you mean?”
It’s not working out, it’s not like it used to be between us”
Natalie sat looking at Shane, she expected this and knew it would happen soon but still, she was shocked.

Here in the dead of the night
Lying here with you by my side
Don’t know if this is wrong or it’s right
Wishing this was just another day
Baby I can feel it’s too late
Shane sat up; it was breaking his heart as well as Natalie’s and he knew she didn’t think that.
“But Shane, what about the time we have spent together”
“I’m sorry. I don’t want us to stop seeing each other, but you have to understand this and see that we’re not going anywhere. I’m sorry”

Just another cruel twist of fate
Looking back through the years
Time has dried all our tears
But all good things must end, Oh Just listen “Shane, I know what your saying, but I can’t lose you”
Shane didn’t know what to say. He didn’t want to break up with her. In his heart he wanted her, but his head was telling him different. He couldn’t follow his heart knowing it could get worse and then losing her would be even harder than it is now.
The excitement had gone. Shane turned towards Natalie; she had her head in her hands.

Baby don’t cry
I can see we’ve lost the feeling
Won’t you open your eyes, and try to find your smile
We’ve known each other to long, to let it all slip away
When all’s said and done
We’ve said our last goodbye
Baby don’t cry

Shane took Natalie’s hand, She watched him as he moved her hand that was held tightly in his, to his chest. She could feel his heart beating. The tears that were rolling slowly down her cheeks, moved faster.
“You’ll always stay here,” Shane whispered while holding her hand closely to his heart.

Baby, we’ve been living a lie
And even though it hurts deep inside
There can be no compromise
‘cause too many chances have passed

Shane hated the silence that was now between them. They had been best friends before realising that they both loved each other as more than friends. Now their chance was up and the love they attempted had slowly faded. Shane hoped their friendship wasn’t going to fade as well as their love.

And if you want a love that can last
Never try to push things to fast
And though I’ve no regrets
I still recall the night we met

“Shane if this is the end, then please take this” Natalie sobbed as she took the necklace from around her neck. She had never taken it off since the day Shane gave it to her and put it on for her.

We said we’d never end so baby listen

Baby don’t cry, I can see we’ve lost the feeling
Won’t you open your eyes?
And try to find your smile
We’ve known each other too long
To let it all slip away
When all’s said and done
We’ve said our last goodbye.

She placed the necklace in his hand. She then closed his hand so that he was holding the necklace tightly. She stood up, Shane followed her movements, and slowly she looked at the photos that were scattered around the room in frames. She couldn’t help but smile.

All the memories we had, I wouldn’t change a thing.
And with the lights down low
I’m dreaming of what could have been

Seeing Natalie smile made Shane smile. He could tell she was remembering the good times together just like he had been for the last few days.
“I’m going to go now” Natalie headed for the door.

Even though we’ve tried, so many times before
I’ll take one look around before I close the door

Shane ran to the door, as Natalie opened it. She stepped onto the steps outside. Shane lent on the doorframe for support. Natalie leaned forward and kissed his cheek.

With this one last kiss
I know deep down inside
The beginning of the end, the ending of our time
Maybe we could try, but no it’s just too late
Just another cruel twist of fate.

As Natalie walked down the steps Shane closed the door and walked to the window.
Natalie was still standing at the bottom of the steep steps. Shane watched her, as a tears escaped from his eyes.

Baby don’t cry, I can see we’ve lost the feeling
Won’t you open your eyes
And try to find your smile
We’ve known each other too long; too let it all slip away
When all’s said and down
We’ve said our last goodbye

Natalie took one last glance at the house, the house that held so many memories and so much of her past. The house that would no longer be part of her future. She saw Shane standing at the window. She saw the tears in his eyes. She then walked off into the darkness.

Baby don’t cry.
