WESTLIFE AND BALLS

Even the mama shop man from Boon Lay could hear the lads' plaintive cries for more Gatorade.

Why does one keep thinking of the zoo when one looks at them?

Aw…like puppies these kids.

Will he succeed??

"You have a nice body Bryan!!" If you act like a monkey, of course you'll look like one.
10am on a Monday morning & already there's a sizable pompom-waving crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Everyone's here to root for Kian & Co in this football friendly organised by BMG, the boys' record label. The Westlife team is made up of all five members of the band, their tour manager Anton & 2 female fans from Taiwan & Thailand respectively. Their opponents, Asia United, comprised a motley group of fans (from Australia, Malaysia & Indonesian), Perfect 10 DJ Daniel Ong and MTV VJ KC Montero!

The match kicks off at about 11.15am & Westlife are off to a good start when Bryan scores within the third minute! Much shoving, tackling & shirt-tugging ensue as the Irish players tear about the pitch adding a goal each to their team's tally!

Feeling sorry for their opponents, Bryan offers to switch sides with KC. Nicky follows suit. With the new recruits on their team, a beefed-up Asia United ends up winning the match 12 goals to 11! Er...fair play, fellas!

There I was enjoying some morning quiet with my coffee and a ham and egg McMuffin… I heard it before I felt it and then I was literally face to face with IT.

"IT" turned out to be an avalanche of teenage girls barely able to contain themselves as they poured into the Indoor Stadium as soon as the barriers were lifted. They were about to see their idols chase a ball around under the pretext of a soccer match. In cute little t-shirts and shorts no less. This must be the stuff dreams are made of - if you were female, aged 10 to 16, with an addiction to Irish boy-candy, that is. It was fast becoming a nightmare for me.

When I finally elbowed my way past the hormonally charged girls into the front section, DJs Jean Danker and Rod Monterio had already worked the crowd into a frenzied shouting match that was in sync with the painful drumming in my head.

But the Irish lads did not disappoint. They burst onto the tiny makeshift "soccer field" with such energy I was forced to give them a chance. Being the boys that they are, they were running around, jumping about, slip-sliding and falling all over the place.

After singing a short acapella version of Extreme's "More Than Words", Team Westlife (the boys with lucky winners from Asia) matched their skills against Asia United (some more lucky winners and Media celebrities from Asia like DJ Daniel Ong and MTV's K.C.). Granted the match was rigged up to look more like a sketch, but well positioned antics kept fans going with more enthusiasm than a drug addict.

"Leave my Shane alone! You suck!!"
- shrieked a very jealous fan indeed.
