West Valley High School of Yakima

Class of 1966

1/30/09 Well, we now have a new president, and I wish Mr. Obama well in the herculean task before him, since we are having such difficult economic times--probably the worst our generation has known.

For those of us lucky enough still to have a parent around, it might be a good idea to get advice from them on how to cope and stretch our budgets, since most of them experienced the Great Depression.

I hope that none of you have had your retirement wiped out, and that you can get by okay until things do get better. I pray that your health needs can be taken care of, and that your family members are supportive of each other through all of this.

I haven't heard much from any class members in the past few months, but did receive an e-mail from Verna this week regarding the loss of another classmate. She writes:

Dave Seward works here (where Verna works) in production, and he just came into my office to tell me that Sue Gimlin (Rich) passed away a day or so ago. Her husband is the head custodian at WV HS (I think it's the HS) and works with Janet (Benton) Seward. Sue had been fighting cancer for some time, which I didn't know. She and her family live in White Swan. Dave said her funeral will be next Thursday.

Please pray for Sue's family; it's so hard to watch cancer take a loved one from you. If I receive any more definite information, I will share it with you here. I didn't have many classes with Sue, but I do remember her as a sweet and rather shy girl, and as Peggy's big sister who watched out for her. (Peggy played tenor sax, so I had band classes with her.)

I hope all of you are in decent health and have some things in your life to take joy in. Family, friends and faith mean so much to me, and I hope you have an abundance of them, too.

Please keep in touch,
Diane

10/14/08 I know, I know...I've been AWOL for a long time!

I will be updating more as I can, but I wanted to remind you that we need to vote in the election this November. Whatever your beliefs, whatever your positions, your voice is needed in this election. Our country is going through some memorable times, and our input will (hopefully) help our leaders make the necessary -- though difficult -- decisions that guide us through the pitfalls of life in the next few years.

And, whatever happens, our new leaders will definitely need our prayers!

Later,
Diane

9/8/06 I just received a note from Verna telling me that Mr. Dowd passed away this past Sunday. He was 80 years old, and was at West Valley from 1955 to 1982, when he retired. Many of us had him as a teacher and or a coach, and I remember him well. When he retired, he was Vice Principal at West Valley...and I bet he made a good one!

A memorial will be held in the commons of the high school at 2:00 on Sunday, September 17.

Best wishes to all of you as you "gear into fall," and I hope those of you who attended the reunion have recuperated enough to get those photos developed and send a few to me for the web site! I'd really like to hear from you, too, with suggestions, ideas, or just plain "what's happenin'?" conversation.

Thanks for checking in,
Diane

8/18/06 DID YOU KNOW THAT...

One of our classmates swims the LENGTH of Rimrock Lake about this time every summer--and has done it for several years?

One of our classmates runs a trucking business...and she's good at it?

One of our classmates is involved in homeschooling--and will be for years?

One of our classmates who has been doing hurricane relief in Lousiana wants to buy a cabin near Bumping Lake?

One of our classmates is writing a doctoral thesis on the effects of casinos on Native American culture?

One of our classmates can't wait to retire and move OUT of California?

Just think, if you'd been at the reunion, you might know who these people are! And if we're lucky, they will send me information for a "profile" page so you can find out by reading here on the site. Let's hope that happens!

There are things I'm still wondering about, too. Like,
"Who has the most grandkids?"
"What's the one best piece of advice you could give to your children and grandchildren?"
"What has been your favorite job?"
"What was your worst job?"
"What was your weirdest job?"
"Where are everyone's siblings (and cousins) -- the ones ahead of us and behind us in school, that we were in classes and clubs with, on teams with, etc.?"
"Who is married to someone else who attended West Valley?"
"Who has managed to live in the area for their whole life (well, maybe not counting the college years)?"
"Does anyone live in the house they grew up in?"
and maybe some lighter questions like,
"Can anyone still fit in the same size clothes they wore in high school?"
"Who has natural colored hair?" or, better yet,
"Who still HAS hair?" hehe

I guess those are some of the questions that we might want to ask next time!

Thanks for visiting, and please keep sending your pictures and e-mails!
Diane

8/17/06 Just a note to let you know I'm hoping to get your reunion pictures for this website--I can't wait to see them!. And I do plan on adding as many "profiles" as I can make time for during the next weeks.

Today I've worked on the Memories section, mostly updating the "Remember When..." page. This was (originally) an ever-evolving list that circulates on the web and in e-mail, but our WV66 page is a combination of a 2001 e-mail (sent by Peggy Herron Schaffer via Verna) and a new one in 2006 (sent by Barb Quackenbush Richartz via Verna), along with a few additions of my own, and some graphics used by permission of a site in Illinois. I hope you enjoy it! I'd love to get suggestions for more items to add to that list!

Also, please help me by thinking of things you remember about growing up in the West Valley area so we can really "personalize" this section of our website. It should be fun!

Thanks, and keep having a good summer,
Diane

40th Class Reunion

We Did It!

8/13/06 Yes, we had a good time! It was so good to talk to people--some of whom I hadn't heard from for decades! And everything was well planned (as usual!) with Verna at the helm of the reunion committee. I wish all of you could have made it to this event!

Since Ron and I drove home to Olympia after the reunion last night, I got to sleep about 5 am this morning, and am not functioning very effectively today. After I get some sleep, I'll be adding pictures and updates the during the next few days or so, and hopefully will be able to post some comments from those who were able to attend.

Stay tuned for more!
Diane

Today's the Day!

8/12/06 Here's the VERY LAST REMINDER of our 40TH reunion schedule for TONIGHT!

7/15/06 Another update for you. I'm sorry to have to let you know that we've lost another classmate this summer.

Verna writes, "Linda Schnabel Wood passed away Monday, July 10 in Vancouver. Her obituary didn't give the cause of death. Survivors are her husband, two children, two sisters, two grandchildren and her mother. Her funeral will be Monday in Vancouver."

I'm sad to hear that Linda's gone so soon; I remember her as a conscientious and talented flute player in our West Valley band, a shy girl who was a pleasant friend to all who knew her. Our condolences go out to her family members as they cope with the loss of this sweet lady.

Linda Schnabel Wood

I don't have any more reunion updates right now, but if you have any last minute questions or corrections regarding our reunion or your updated personal information, please contact Verna or this website so we can answer your questions and/or make any necessary changes.

Hope to see you next month in Yakima!

Diane

6/30/06 Another loss to be reported. This time it's one of our teachers, Mr. Eugene Wells. He died Monday, June 12, in Yakima. He was 75. Mr. Wells was born in Shelton, Washington and taught school for many years before he retired from West Valley School District.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Wells of Yakima; two daughters, Suzan Kelley and Cheryl Miller, both of Yakima; a son, Scott Wells of Tieton; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

I know a lot of you have memories of him as your math teacher, or as your club advisor; and although I wasn't in those groups, I do remember him with his shock of dark hair and that big grin flashing across his face.

Our condolences go out to his family.

Diane

5/18/06 On a sad note, Verna sent me this message this morning:
"I'm sorry to tell you of the death of another classmate - Ron Richmond. He was living in Cathlamet and passed away Sunday May 14, 2006, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Lois (Hipner), his son and four grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters (including Cheryl Richmond Womack, Chehalis).
The funeral will be Saturday, May 20, 2006, in Yakima."

Our condolences go out to all of the family; it's so painful to experience such a loss, especially a sudden one. I know he will be missed.

Ron Richmond

Please continue to keep in touch with Verna or me, and let us know about yourself and other classmates. I will be visiting my daughter in Oklahoma for a week, then traveling to Nebraska and on home the next week, but I will be checking the e-mail when I have a chance, so don't put off sending your news!

God bless you and keep you,
Diane

4/24/06 Note: Read more about how the 40th Reunion committee progressed to this point in the planning!
3/23/06 Verna sent this in a recent e-mail:
"Bonnie Beck Groenig and Lisa (Aletha) Dailey both retired from their jobs and are working together in a snack business in which they deliver trail mixes, chocolates and other snacks to businesses in Yakima. Sounds like they're having the time of their lives! I'm really happy for them!"

I think there may be more than a few of us looking at the possibility of "down-sizing" our careers to a less hectic, more "fun" mode like Lisa and Bonnie have done. I believe "retirement" holds a lot more possibilities than we'd ever imagined 40 years ago; not many of us are ready to completely sit back and twiddle our thumbs. Hope you are all finding something "just right" for you to do these days, exploring possibilities for new directions, and having fun doing it. Don't want to rust, do we?

Back soon with more information,
Diane

3/13/06 It's our Website's 5 year "birthday" today! I have been tidying up the site and even managed to find a few more midi files for our Music page today. I'll keep trying to add more as I can find time. The midis are not as sophisticated as newer music file types, but at least you can recognize the songs and enjoy the memories!

See you this summer,
Diane

3/12/06 Another note for you: People DO move around, even at "our age." Gary Merritt went about as far as he could...from Washington to Florida! Some people have changed last names since the last reunion. And we found Gene Benedictson ("Radioguy"). He and Julie decided it's time for them to relax a bit, so they sold the radio stations and left Clarkston for the town of Sandy, OR. More from Gene soon (when I get my act together and get his bio page set up--be patient, I'll get there!).

Check back soon!
Diane

2/26/06 We're continuing to get information from and about classmates. Thank you for all your help. I am updating the pages as quickly as possible. There are a lot of address changes, a lot e-mail changes, and even a few name changes. There is good news, like finding Bob Hansen looking good as ever and living in Ellensburg (editor's update in July 2006: NOT! it wasn't our Bob...the real one's living on the east coast!!!), and bad news, like finding an obituary for Jack Kinsfather. Life, as always, is full of ups and downs and changes, and I hope to continue helping you keep up with those affecting our classmates and our memories.

Thanks for coming to the site!
Diane

2/16/06 JUST A NOTE: Many thanks to those of you already sending in updates. We appreciate it, even if it does take me a day or two (or three!) to catch up and get the information onto the correct page(s)! Remember, we'd welcome...no, we'd REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like to get...photos from you, too!

Thanks,
Diane

2/9/06 NOW is the time to get our contact information up-to-date and correct. Verna would like you to PLEASE send her (or me) the email and street addresses of any classmates you know (including yourself). If you know someone has moved, but don't have the actual address, we'd appreciate getting whatever information we can (city, region, etc.).

Even if you think we should already have the information, please send it anyway--since 5 years is a long time and those things do tend to change. We'd rather have duplicate information than miss out on contacting anyone.

Thanks for checking here to see what's happening. I hope you'll get involved as much as possible, and that you're looking forward to seeing a LOT of classmates on August 12th! See you then!
Diane

PLEASE NOTE: All past entries (2001-2005)from this page have been moved to another page so this one will load more quickly. To read those past entries, which contain all kinds of individual updates and non-reunion information, click here.

Thanks,
Diane

Welcome, classmates!

Glad to see that you found our WVHS class of '66 site! The class of 66 has had its very own "home on the web" since 2001, but if this is your first visit, please bookmark this site and come here often to relax and have fun browsing through these pages.

And remember, this is YOUR website. That means we're eager and anxious to have your contributions here, too. E-mail addresses, personal website links, pictures, biographical updates, favorite oldies, memories, questions, comments, suggestions...you name it, we'd love to receive it!

The older (and wiser) we get, the more we can appreciate our "good old days" and the people who were such a big part of our lives back then. May we grow closer through the "good new days" ahead, and may this website contribute to that goal.

Now, just choose and click a 66 below and come on in!
