Sarahia sighed as she sat her bag down on her bed. she walked over to the window and glanced out. The sun was setting just over the horizon, and Sarahia had a wonderful view. She sighed as she took her things out of her bag and sat them on the desk and dresser that were in the room. Her brother, Paulin, knocked on her door. "I'm going out to explore," He said. "If I'm not back by dark, tell the Weyrwoman, and don't try to recuse me yourself." Sarahia sighed, "One time, Paulin. One time I tried to find you myself. Sure, it took a couple of days to get us back, but I managed it." Paulin laughed and shook his head, "Sarahia, just don't try it again." "Paulin," Sarahia called as he turned to leave. "Do you think they're bring Hinya with them when they get the rest of our stuff?" "They have to Sarahia," Paulin said. "You love that runner, and it's the only way for you to get around." Sarahia sighed, "You always know what to say, Paulin. I wish Jamen was like that." Paulin shook his head, "Sarahia, there is no need to wish Jamen be different because it's not going to happen. Jamen is the jerk he is, and will always be that way." Sarahia shook her head, "You're right, but I can always wish, can't I?" "There's no harm in it," Paulin said. "Besides, if he does Impress, he might just change his attitude." Paulin and Sarahia just looked at each other and laughed, "Jamen? Impress?" Paulin laughed again and shook his head, "I have to get going, Sarahia. I'll see you some time tonight." Sarahia nodded as she opened up one of her books. Dust fell off of the cover as she turned the pages. She found the one she had been reading the night before. Removing her marker, she traced the words with her finger. This was an old book and some of the words were unfamilar to her. "Apen-dic-dame?" Sarahia struggled. "What's does that mean?" Sarahia sighed as she flipped the page. There was a full body diagram of a person. Each - what the Masterhealer called - 'organ' was labeled. Sarahia stared at the picture in awe. Exactly how old was this book? She'd never seen a diagram of the internal works of a person before. She shook her head and closed the book. She would never be able to learn all of this. You could always become a dragonhealer, Sarahia heard. There are so very few of them around anymore and with our best at Emerald, we need them disperatly. Sarahia looked around. She blushed when she noticed the Weyrleader and his blue hatchling Endoth, standing behind her. "Don't be embarrassed," J'gon said. "We just wanted to welcome our new residents, but it seems that neither of your brothers is in." "Well, Paulin went out hunting, and I have no sharding idea where Jamen could have gotten off to," Sarahia sighed. J'gon laughed a bit, "Does he wander off often?" "To often," Sarahia sighed. "But it doesn't matter. He wanders back after awhile. He's probably just exploring." "Search!!!!" Someone screamed down into dorms. J'gon nodded, "You care to try your luck?" "I guess," Sarahia sighed as she stood. *** Sarahia stood and watched as the riders looked over everyone. They didn't seem very pleased whenever the reached a female candidate. "Males! We need males, not females!" They would shriek. Sarahia took a step back everytime they did that. She wanted to get away from these riders. Maybe it was a bad idea coming to this weyr. Suddenly, Jamen came up behind her and clamped his hands down on her shoulders. Jumping, Sarahia elbowed Jamen as the rider came closer to them. "You there," He said. Sarahia turned and looked at Jamen, "Him?" She choked. "Yes, him," The rider said. "What's your name?" "Jamen," Jamen said proudly. "Hey, what's going on?" Paulin asked loudly as he came stumbling from the woods with a canine following him. "And you there," The rider pointed at Paulin. "You two will do for now. If we don't fnd anymore, we will be back." J'gon nodded and sighed as he watched Jamen and Paulin board a large blue. "Where are they going?" Sarahia demanded. "Cincanta," J'gon said. "They're last gold clutch had trouble finding male candidates. They've gotten quite a few from her in the last few sevendays." Sarahia sighed, "I can't believe they took Jamen." "You'd be surprised who would Impress," J'gon said. "Why just about five sevendays ago, we sent a girl named Kayla to Ocean Side to try her luck. She returned to us with one of the most beautiful greens anyone had ever seen." "So," Sarahia sighed. "Kayla was one of the nastiest people you or anyone would have the misfurtune of meeting," J'gon sighed. "And now?" Sarahia asked. "She's still pretty bad, but she's getting better," J'gon sighed. "It's not the dragon that makes the person or the person the makes they dragon. They both compensate for each other." Sarahia nodded as she turned back towards the dorms, "I'll try and remember that," she sighed. Entering her dorm, she placed her human medical texts back in her bag. She covered her face with her hands as she flopped back on her bed. "How am I ever going to do this?" She half growled, half sighed as she shook her head. Continue... |
