Morning Star Weyr
Werita was a strange girl. She had never been taken very seriously by the other girls of the Weyr and many thought it would be a true surprise if she ever even had the chance to Impress. Werita didn't mind though. Being an outsider meant she wasn't often dragged out of her bunk at odd hours of the night to awe at the night sky, that she wouldn't be harrassed to join the boys of the weyr during their crew duties, and that she had most of her free time to herself to write her music.
Werita had been interested in music since she had been living in a cothold just outside of Morning Star territory. She had had friends then. Several of them who all loved music but were in to isolated an area to be found by a harper. Werita fit in there, but she didn't here.
Werita barely remembered the cothold, and the only thing she had to remember it by was the silver flit her best friend had given her before he had left for the Harper Hall.
He had been to a gather at Starlight Hold and had helped the Hold harper with his ballads. Karastan had promised to report him to the Masterharper and had given him the firelizard egg that he had recieved from the Weyrwoman of Morning Star as a promise momento.
Urion hadn't wanted a firelizard to deal with so he gave to egg to Werita to remember him by. The egg had hatched two days after Urion had left. The silver hatchling had been such a surprise to her, but she thought it fitting that Urion had given her such a special gift to remember such a special person.
Pewter circled her head as she tried to write down the score to the song she had thought of last night.
"Shoo! You annoying little pest!" Werita sighed, laughing slightly at the noises Pewter was making.
Werita sighed as she scratched out certain notations that she had messed up when Pewter was bothering her. This song was probably the best one she'd thought if in some time.
As she finished writing it roughly, she moved to her floor harp and sat down. She carefully plucked a few strings, and then began to play the opening chords. She altered a few of the notes and began again.
In my dreams I am lost forever
But my hope keeps shining through
In my dreams you're my only savior
And I extend my hand to you
But I wake to find you gone
Not peacefully by my side
And I wonder what I did
To make you run and hide
"Very good," Derian applauded as he entered the room, Karist flitting above his head.
Werita hurriedly packed up all of her scores, hoping that Derian wasn't that good at memorizing scores. She had heard about how he had stolen scores from other gifted musicians in order to get to Journeyman level. He had even gotten K'risn, while he was still Karison, kicked out of the hall. Karist dove at Pewter, hissing wildly at the silver as if he wasn't honorable enough to be in the presence of the blue, but it was like that with all the males. Karist challenged all the males and chased all the females, even when they were not in heat.
"What's the problem, Werita?" Derian asked, grinning wily.
Werita gulped in abject terror. She didn't know why she was afriad of this Journeyman. There was just something about him that she didn't like, that just didn't rub her the right way. Pewter landed on her shoulder and hissed at Karist and Derian, making the Journeyman take a step back.
"What's the matter, Rita?" Derian sighed, using the nickname many people in the Weyr called her. "It's not like I'm going to hurt you."
That tone. His inflection. She may not have been harper schooled, but she knew how to tell when someone was lieing. She gathered her work into her arms and back against the wall.
"Come on, Rita," Derian grinned. "Loosen up."
He pushed the scrolls out of her hands, and that was when she realized what was wrong, what was worrying her. He wanted nothing to do with her music. He wanted her! A fresh wave of fear hit her as she laided back against the weyr wall, trying to move towards the door, but Derian encircled her in his arms as she tried to push him back. Suddenly, a large bulged came from her weyr window. Werita glanced away from Derian to see who it was, but that wasn't a good idea. He pulled her close to him, ignoring the bulge of the brown who was hovering by Werita's window.
"DERIAN, GET OFF HER!!!!!!!!!!" The booming voice of K'risn drifted into her window.
The brownrider bound into her room from his brown's back and tore Derian away from Werita. K'risn pulled her in towards him, not in a threating way Derian had, but in order to calm her.
"Derian, I knew you would sink low, but I never thought..." But K'risn was interrupted by Derian turning, being hit, and then falling to the ground. "Urion!" K'risn shouted.
"Urion?" Werita question, pulling away from K'risn.
"Rita, my dearest Rita!" Urion exclaimed, rushing forward and pulling her close. "Are you all right? Did this monster hurt you?"
"No, Urion," Werita cried. "I'm fine, thanks to you both."
K'risn smiled only briefly enough to reassure Werita, "I always knew that Derian was no good, but this enough to get him kicked out of the Weyr."
Urion rocked Werita as K'risn picked Derian up and loaded him onto his brown Menirth, "I'll be right back, Urion. Right after I take out this trash."
As K'risn and Menirth winged down the side of the weyr, Urion smiled at Weria, "What are you doing here?" Werita asked.
"I made Journeyman, Rita," Urion sighed, "and K'risn was bringing me to be Derian's assitant, but now..."
"You'll be made replacement Journeyman!" Werita exclaimed.
"You think?" Urion as just as Pewter chirped to Werita the all to common call.
  "Zearia wants to see you..."
