My wife is a HUGE Auburn Tiger football fan. So, it came as no surprise to me that she asked me to build her something with the school's logo on it. What did surprise me is she asked me to build her a motorcycle. I've built a couple for myself and our kids. I have a spare frame, tank, etc laying around the garage, so everyone will be able to follow the build as it progresses.
The plan is to paint the tank a white metallic, then add a large dark blue stripe and two thin orange stripes, similar in layout to the Daytona Special. I have a Daytona fender we are going to use as well.
March 2008 - This is a picture of the frame and tank before I start my work.
Wheels arrived yesterday.
Pulled the dents in the tank.
Pictures from repairing the tank.
4/20/2008 - This is the oil tank after I stripped it down. There were just too many different layers/colors of paint for me to be confident the new paint I was about to apply would stick on a long-term basis.
New Decals from Auburn University's bookstore.
Painted top triple clamp.
5/04/2008 - I had some spare time today so I finished the frame and started hanging pieces on it. As you can see the cases to the motor are now installed.
5/10/2008 - I had time this week to paint the side covers.
6/13/2008 - The seat, headlight bucket, gauges, headlight ears and other assorted parts have arrived. I found some very small dents in the tank and fender when I was wet sanding them for painting, so I fixed the dents and sprayed another layer of primer.
I am trying to get the wheels out for powder-coating before I leave for summer vacation. That way they are done while I wait. Also, the Tiger eyes decals are in and I ordered a custom set of Yamaha Daytona Special decals done in orange and Navy Blue. It is all coming together nicely. - OK, I didn't find a powder-coater until I returned from vacation, so I'm hoping to drop off the wheels this week.
7/15/2008 - I completed the painting last night late, so I waited until the clear coat was dry before taking pictures.
7/20/2008 - I finished the decal install, applied a layer of clear coat over the decals and placed the pieces on the motorcycle to see how it all looks.
8/02/2008 - I dropped off the wheels with the powdercoater. They should be back in 3 weeks.
8/27/2008 - The wheels are back from the powdercoating shop.
3/01/2009 - The wheels are installed and I sandblasted and painted the heads, cylinders and engine.
The list is getting smaller!
