"There is Jackson standing like a stonewall! Rally behind the Virginians!" The words attributed to General Barnard Bee as he tried to rally his fleeing South Caroina brigade. At least one observer considered these walls to be an insult aimed to be critical of the immobility of Jackson's Brigade. We will never know for certain - Bee was killed moments later. However, the reputation and accomplishments of Jackson and his legendary Stonewall Brigade certainly earned the nickname as a complement.
A monument to Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
I love this monument to Jackson at Manassas. Standing near to the spot where Kackson sttod as he earned the nickname "Stonewall". Usually described as lanky or even skinny, this statue captures his superman nature of his reputation and performance in the field.
