Pacific Coast on the Baja Peninsula
Over the summer I chaperoned a group of teenagers from Hancock County on a mision trip to Campo de Suenos near Ensenada, Mexico. Ensenada is a large tourist city located on the Pacific Coast of the Baja Peninsula. While in Mexico we constructed a new house for a local family from a neighboring village. On this page you will find some photos of our activities and some examples of what life is like for the people of the Baja.
A Nearby House
The Banio The Capuche
No indoor plumbing...The only bathroom is the "banio" - an outhouse...The drinking water supplied weekly in 3 rain barrels kept outdoors. Entertaining the kids...Capuche means "piggyback".
A cardboard house near the worksite. This was the perfect trip for American teenagers... We are known fro our whining & complaining, but driving past this home everyday was a cure for even the biggest complainers.
A New Home
A view of the new house and the village.
The new home was 16 x 20 with 3 rooms plus a loft. No indoor plumbing and only 2 electrical circuits...but it is a manison compared to their previous home. Regardless of their status in life, this was easily the most content and cheerful family I have ever met.
La Bufadora
La Bufadora is a popular nearby tourist attraction and market. La Bufadora translates as "The Blowhole" - a reference to the rock formation where the Pacific tides force the water to surge upwards through a hole in the cliff rocks to form a whale-like spout.
Myself and some of the guys at La Bufadora.
