Hello and welcome to the first issue of the PrestOOpniks website. Hopefully in time to come pop-ups and other annoying rubbish will be paid for to be removed. Stick with it though and apologies for the annoyance, I know we all hate it really. So for that reason and that alone, I put the above picture to give a you all a laugh to start the tour with. To save scrolling to the top of the page each time I have added a 'Back To Top' Bookmark at the end of each page.
So what's new with the PrestOOpniks, well lets go back to the start and work forward. The band was formed by W Grimes, back in 1989. Additional members included Brain (The Gob) Ashley, (The Right Reverend) Simon J Lewis, and a host of people I sampled and used without them knowing. The first album recorded being 'The One That Got Away' was done with an old keyboard, 2 tape decks, a karaoke machine and and old Amiga 500. With the price of recording technology tumbling ever down and music getting more and more crappy, I decided to have a go myself and that's how it all began. PrestOOpniks is a Russian word Meaning criminal, not that we were, it was the fact we sampled heavily in the early days and so we viewed it as a bit like stealing. The name sounded good and is also used in 'A Clockwork Orange', so it gave us a sample for our band's name. With a name and the technology behind us, we embarked on our voyage to the land of god-awful music and created some of our own on the way.
Since then about 9 or 10 albums have been produced. I forget myself how many as some stuff has been irretrievably lost and some is so bad I won't admit it's mine. The production level has got better through out the albums even if the style hasn't. Many good bits of equipment have been 'utilized'. A word used by me meaning butchered to make it do something it wasn't intended to do, but it worked anyway. Plus a whole array of programs and applications to produce my work. Amiga 500, 1200, ZX Spectrums, Sharp MZ700, Fostex tape decks, mixing units, karaoke machines, Cubase, Sonic Foundries and lately E-Jay. The album 'Eclectic Juxtaposition' was almost entirely done with E-Jay bar the last Amiga track. The title summed up the album perfectly, being different bits I like being put together into a coherent whole. It also has the initials E J, a somewhat overlooked fact that took me ages to think of and got missed entirely by everyone. A bit too tenuous I guess.
Update
The latest album 'G's Patio People' is an album for my favorite chat room and the people who inhabit it. I have done a few bits and pieces as well, just experiments to see how things will work. The Idea was offered yet again by the inspirational and most wondrous Lady Bunny of Snuggledom. If you rolled everything amazing into one package it would end up as the only person who can inspire me. So major thanks goes out to SB :)
Nearly all the work done has been for fun, no money has been made from it, but the experience has been good to get as I went along. The PrestOOpniks have many fingers in many pies, and the next pages are some areas we have dabbled with or have interests in.
This site is a trimmed down version of my C+G version, when time and money permits, it will be upgraded and more multimedia will be available online. So for now :
