George Edwards Peacock
Open to the 27 October 2002
Venue: The Picture Gallery, Mitchell Wing

Oppressed by debt and a failing solicitor's practice, Geogore Edwards Peacock forged a power of attorney in 1836. Sentenced to transportation for life, he arrived in Sydney in 1837, market as a 'gentleman' convict. By 1940 he was living quietly at South Head, working as a meteorological recorder while attempting to salvage a failing marrage.

In the 1940s he began painting professionally. His oils, generally small and atmospheric, concentrated on Sydney Harbour and its villas.
At the time the painting gave a unigue veiw of Sydney Harbour.
