My 4th Cousin,  John Carlton Higginbotham was a student at Lynchburg College when the War for Southern Independence began.  He entered the CSA as Captain in 1861; promoted Major and Lt. Colonel in 1862, and Colonel in 1863, being one of the youngest officers of these grades in the service.
He was wounded seven times, and at last killed at Spotsylvania Court House, May 10, 1864, while commanding the 25th VA Reg., Jones' Brigade.  His commission as Brigadier-General had been approved, but he died before it reached him.
