Before I started principal photography, I knew the ambitious scope of the story (for a student film) would require an equally full and rich soundtrack to complete the experience. I spent months in ProTools - finessing dialog, cutting effects, laying in foley and ambience - but I knew in my heart that the music had the potential to make or break it.
I turned to a fellow USC alum, Jonathan Price. Jonathan had composed music for several features and musicals, and was working professionally as an orchestrator for Chris Young.
We decided to produce a 4.1 channel surround music track (a stereo pair for the front, stereo pair for the surrounds, plus a sub channel). We also separated the "booms" from the main tracks so that we could finesse the levels in the final mix. To accomodate overlapping cues, we ended up with 12 ProTools Tracks, which mixed down to 4.1.
The results were awesome (and room-shaking). The final mix was done at Universal Studios.
You can listen to 2 of the tracks on Jonathan's website. |
