The Warren Heights Central Fire Station is located at 510 Martin Luther King Parkway. Constructed in 1940 on the site of the original fire department headquarters, and remodeled in 1971 and again in 1988, it is the headquarters for all fire department operations. Housed here are the offices of Fire Chief Scott Vallant and Deputy Fire Chief Troy Golemon. Squad Company 1, Ladder Company 1, and the elite Rescue Company 1 are housed here. These units are citywide units and respond along with the outlying stations to emergency responses. The units housed at this station in 1940 were Engine Company 3 and Rescue Company 1. Engine Company 3 moved to its new location at Station 3 when it was built. Squad 1 is manned by 1 Lieutenant, 1 Engineer, and 4 Firefighter/EMT's. Squad Company 1 is the first due engine company in the downtown and southeast areas of the city. The difference between a squad and an engine is that like a heavy rescue, the "Squad" carries extrication equipment, but also carries an additional three firefighters. Our Squad 1 carries an AED, ALS drug box, a hydraulic powered combination tool, and SCUBA diving equipment. Ladder 1 is staffed by 1 Lieutenant, 1 Engineer, and 2 Firefighters. Ladder 1 only has a 75' ladder and is due to be replaced in the near future. A platform or 100' aerial ladder will most likely take its place at Station 1. Rescue 1 is manned by 1 Captain, 1 Engineer, and 2 Rescue Technicians. Rescue 1 carries a full set of extrication tools, equipment for high and low angle rescues, equipment for confined space rescues, equipment for collapse and trench rescues, and SCUBA diving equipment. Also located at Station 1 are Chief 1 (Chief Vallant's vehicle), Brush 3, and Utility 4. |
