Warren Heights Southwest Fire Station is located at 2780 Erie Boulevard SW. Constructed in 1931, it is the oldest active fire station in the city. Although it is currently known as Station 4, it was originally known at Engine House No. 1. Closed in the early 1982 due to budget constraints, this house sat empty for 20 years before the city decided to re-open it. Engine Company 4 was recently re-organized following the purchase of a new 2004 Pierce Dash pumper. Engine Company 4 was disbanded in 1989, and had been organized as Hazardous Materials Company 1 in 2001. That company now has merged with the new Engine Company 4 and will be known as such from now on. Engine 4 is a 2004 Pierce Dash with a 2000gpm pump and 500 gallon water tank. This unit also carries 50 gallons of foam, the city's hazardous materials arsenal, and also has a light tower for after dark operations. Specifically designed for Station 4, the low profile cab made fitting a newer piece of apparatus into the 73 year old firehouse. The old HazMat 1 vehicle has been retired and sent to reserve status. It will be used as a spare rescue rig and command center. It is being housed at the recently re-opened Station 5 on Rockefeller Boulevard. Station 4 is staffed by 1 Captain, and 2 Firefighter/Tech's. The firefighters housed at this location are trained not only as firefighters, but also hazardous materials technicians, paramedics, and certified SCUBA divers. The department is starting to implement advanced life support into the Bureau of Fire by using paramedic engines. This will provide citizens with top level pre-hospital care before other responders can arrive for transportation to a hospital. |
