Vajpayee urges nation to stand behind quake victims
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today expressed the nation's resolve to meet the trail of devastation left by yesterday's killer earthquake in Gujarat on a war footing to bring swift succour for the thousands of victims.
''We will soon rebuild the flattened houses and resettle inumerable habitations which were wiped out by the quake,'' the Prime Minister said addressing the NCC cadets here this morning.
Before the beginning of the proceedings at the NCC PM's rally, a minute's silence was observed for the victims of the quake that killed thousands and injured many more in Gujarat, particularly in the areas around its epicentre Bhuj and Ahmedabad.
Calling upon the entire nation to stand behind Gujarat, Vajpayee said,''Man has never accepted defeat while fighting against natural calamities.''
''We have to be always ready to fight against all odds as also the fury of the nature,'' he said while exhorting the youth to contribute towards nation-building. The Prime Minister lauded the role of NCC and urged the countrymen to adopt its motto of ''unity and discipline''.
''You have to shoulder more responsibility towards achieving the national objectives,'' he told the cadets drawn from all over the country. UNI
