Re: Marriage Registers!! ccaro1953

CJ Hi yes it is possible that this is an alternate spelling .
Not something that I have checked yet though I have another ancestor
whose maiden name was Greybill and from what I can see ,they all seem
to have the same roots. Thanks for the tip on that spelling will have
to check it out further

#96 Re: Marriage Registers!! cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 6/1/00 10:41 pm ccaro!! Let me know if it is another spelling, I know that there is one in the Gazetteer that I have that was a qualified magistrate or something along that line, and I believe there are a few in the 1871 census as well. There may be others as well but I will wait until you confirm before I go looking too hard. CJ

#100 Re: Marriage Registers!! ccaro1953 6/5/00 7:05 am CJ Hi While there may be an alternate spelling for my Grebel I really have no idea which one it might be. The Grebel that I am interested in finding is Judith born 1833 Germany. I beleive that she must have come to Canada as a child. She first appears in the 1851 Ontario Census as the 18 year old wife of my gr grandfather August Dammeier ( spelt Dumire in census records) with a one year old child Amelia. I have found eveidence that she was not Amelias mother and that she was August's second wife and that the marriage must have taken place here in Ontario. I would imagine that it would have been in Waterloo County. As you can see without finding this marriage record I dont think that I have a lot of hope of finding my Grebels. Thanks for your help . They may just turn up :o) Carolyn

#118 McKellar-Paterson Marriage jb44_44805 6/15/00 10:54 am Hello! Would greatly appreciate it if you could check for a marriage between Archibald McKellar and Mary Paterson in Kent County approximately 1834. Thanks much.
#119 Re: McKellar-Paterson Marriage cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 6/15/00 12:23 pm jb! Sorry no McKellars are listed in the book, there are however the following Patersons: Betsey, Charles, Phebe Anne and Walter and the following Patterson: Clarissa If they were married in a Roman Catholic Church however, they may not be in this book as I have yet to find any information on any of the Roman Catholics I have been looking for unless they were married in a Baptist, Methodist or other type of Church. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance! CJ

#126 Re: Questions for Everyone? cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 6/18/00 12:08 am Thank you Ephraim! Perhaps you could give me some advice! I have one relative that I am having a great deal of problems finding information about as he was born abt. 1823 and died either late 1857 or early 1858. Any way the question is: Do you have any suggestions as to where I should look for further information as to parents and death records? There is no death certificate and I haven't found a church record. Our local paper didn't start up until the late 1890's either. All I have been able to locate is the marriage and the only reason I know the approximate date of death is from his son's obituary. I could really use some clues or helpful hints here! Thanks, CJ
#127 Re: Questions for Everyone? ephraim_ca (39/M/Ontario, Canada) 6/18/00 2:33 pm Hi CJ Two thoughts come to me immediately. First, if he was a land owner, have you checked the the older Estate Files found on the Archives of Ontario page. These would contain the land records and the wills of the people involved. Second, have you gone to the Land Records Office for the area concerned. Many of the LRO's have archive rooms that hold the older land books. Everything that happens with land was recorded with the township. Once conferderation came into being these records were brought into the present day offices and stored. Before 1869 all deaths were recorded with the Township Clerk so check with the OGS branch for the area as to where the Clerk's records have been stored. #128 Sutcliffe/Ireland/Acton Surnames mc7x (48/M/Woodstock, Ontario) 6/21/00 12:25 pm Hi, I have just joined the club and I am looking for information on Sutcliffe/Ireland/Acton surnames. I have traced back to the Irish Potato Famine and have hit a brick wall. I would appreciate any info anyone can share on these surnames.

#130 I'm new!!! Sunsher (25/F/Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) 6/21/00 5:42 pm Hi...I'm new to this club. I've been doing my family history for about 2 years. Have quite a bit of information but am missing a few generations to fill in all the holes. My main focus at the moment is on SERVOS and ROOD (from England). I know the Servos' were UEL's and have them traced to the 1600's. Looking for the parents of George "Stanley" SERVOS (b. Jan. 20, 1898). Had at least two brothers (Harmen and Leslie(?) and a sister (Margaret, we think). He last lived in Binbrook, Ontario. Any ideas?
#131 Re: Sutcliffe/Ireland/Acton Surnames mc7x (48/M/Woodstock, Ontario) 6/22/00 7:23 pm Thank You CJ I have tried all of the family searches I have found on the web. I have traced back to my gr gr grandfather and I know that they came to Ontario during or shortly after the potato famine. Most records were destroyed in Ireland around this time, so I am unable to trace back any farther. Thanks Again Tom

#139 Looking for some advice lunarunicorn_2000 (23/F/Barrie, ON) 7/21/00 2:40 pm Hello My grandparents emigrated to Canada from N. Ireland in 1920. We have completely lost touch with any reletives over there and would like to find them and trace our family tree. We have tried a couple of organisations in N. Ireland, but all they could do was get their marriage and birth certs (which my father has here already) we can't find any information further back than that. Any ideas on a next step? Thanks Cindy lunarunicorn@cois.on.ca

#151 Need some brainstorming help ccaro1953 8/31/00 9:15 pm Hi I am in need of some ideas or advice or something. I have been working on tracing my 2X gr grandfather August DAMMEIER. I have been able to glean bits and peices but now have found some information and am not sure what to make of it. I was once again checking census records, in particular the 1901 census since it asked for a birthdate and also a year in which the person named came to Canada if they were not born here.In this census August's birthdate is given as 22 Nov 1829. The date on his tombstone is 1827 and his death record from Ontario vital stats states that at his death in 1904 (Dec 27) that he was 74 years 1 mo and 5 days.( It would appear that the 22 Nov is correct) If I have calcuated correctly that would make his year of birth 1829. Now for the interesting part. The census records indicate that he came to Canada in 1840. So no matter which year is correct it would mean that he was very young when he came here. Any where from 11 to 13 years of age. I have never been able to find any trace of parents or siblings here in Canada. Any ideas? Would it be possible that he came to Canada with another family. I beleive that he was from Prussia. Is it possible that he was sent here with whom ever to avoid a draft situation. I am not familar with the history of prussia at that time. Does any one have any ideas or comments I would certainly apperciate them Thanks Carolyn
#152 Re: Need some brainstorming help cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 9/3/00 11:55 am Hi Carolyn! It may be possible that August's parents died, either in their home country or on their way here and a family, either a relative or close friend, brought him here with them. When I was transcribing the 1851/52 census, I noticed several families with children of different surnames, some of them were separated among neighbours, it is my belief that these children somehow lost their parents and that the neighbours were nice enough to take them into their already full homes so that they would have regular family lives and be near to each other. If you can find a passenger list with August on board, you may be able to determine if he came with his parents or with a different family. I know that many of the ships that came to Canada had serious illness' aboard and that many people died on their way to freedom. CJ
#153 Check out this Link cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 9/4/00 3:03 pm Have you ever wanted to actually see where your relative had his lot of land? Well this website has the answer at least for most of the Townships in Ontario. Take a look, maybe you will be lucky enough to actually see a map and location of your great grandparents land. http://imago.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/default.asp Good Luck CJ
#154 A Little Helpful Advise cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 9/11/00 9:14 pm Hi Everyone! Ancestry.com is a pay site, but if you subscribe to their Daily or Weekly free email newsletters, they give you a chance to view selected databases for free for 10 days each. They are not just United States databases either. I have viewed several from Canada as well. Lately there has been at least one Canadian database available per week, some times as many as one per day. It doesn't cost anything to get the email newsletters so why not give it a try? http://www.ancestry.com Hope this helps!
#155 Genealogy Scam cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 9/20/00 1:31 am There is a website that is scamming Genealogists, it is at http://www.familydiscovery.com. Basically what it is doing is charging you money to get information that is already available for free on the internet. All that they do is organize it. On the first couple of pages it sounds very appealing but if you scroll down to the bottom of the "What's New" page you will see that basically all they are is a "search engine". From what I understand on copyright laws, they are definately infringing. Just wanted to warn everyone! CJ
