Any help will do and be appreciated. diezywiezy 1/10/01 3:02 am The Surnames I am looking for are: Corcoran, Black, Carnahan, Clark (sp?), Hazlett. I would like to know the origin of any of these names before they came to Canada. As far as I know they all came to New Brunswick. My Grandfather was James Corcoran I believe died in 1972. Grandmother Edna Katherine Corcoran nee Black died 1987. GGrandfather was John Adam Carnahan died 1967-68, GGrandMother Ella Elizabeth Carnahan nee Clark died 1977, Albert Hazlett died in 1940 just before my mother was born. The families talk but are very vague. As far as I know they were all born in Canada it is the family before them that I am seeking. I even checked ship records to see any of these names. I have searched the British Isles as one family member mentioned Cardiff Wales. All I could find was that the name Corcoran is a dirivitive of Corin. Thanks for any help. Diezy

Need help with Flavin/ Flaven/Flavan CA LSpegal (42/F/Sandpoint, ID.) 1/10/01 10:11 pm Hi, I am new and thought I would post my current "dilemma". Hello, I've been researching my g.grandmother and her parents and siblings for some time now. I know more about them after they came to N.H. and MA. then I can find in CAN. I finally (with help from a kind gentlemen that did a lookup for me) did find census info abt. them as follows: census 1861 Dorchester parish : Flaven, James 45, N.S.; Sarah,wife,40,N.S.; Henry, 10; John,8; Elizabeth,6; Sarah Jane,4. census 1871 Dorchester parish: Flavan, James,45,N.S. Cath.Irish, labourer; Sarah,40, N.S.; Harry,20,N.S. labourer; John,17,N.S., shoemaker; Sarah I/J ?,13,N.B.; Isabella,9 N.B.(my g.grandmother); Edward,5,N.B.; James W.,3, N.B.. Records I do have of her say she was born St.John or Moncton,N.B. This is all I've been able to find on them in Canada so far. I've found a few other Flavin names and spellings, but nothing on this family as yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated !!! thanks, Lisa

Re: Need help with Flavin/ Flaven/Flavan cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 1/11/01 9:49 pm Hi Lisa, I don't know if this will help but in searching the Nova Scotia Archives web site, I found this in the Land Petitions Database: Item #2125 Mfm no: 15796 Grantee: John Flahaven Year: 1819 Petiton to Ainslie: Petitioner, age 31, emigrated from Ireland eleven years before, and with his wife and 5 children resides at North West Arm of Sydney River, on land he purchased. he asks a wood lot in the rear of his present property. Note: A mill lot that has often been petitioned for. I know the spelling isn't exactly as you have it, but sometimes for various reasons the spellings of names were changed. This surname was too close to just ignore. By the information you have from the 1861 census one of the five children noted above could be your James Flavan. Hope this helps! CJ

Re: CJ. diezywiezy 1/12/01 3:11 pm You are right this is my grandfather!!! It means so much to me. Another question, how do I view microfilm? There doesn't seem to be any link to view them. Again thankyou so much for your time. Diezy

# 220

Re: CJ. cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 1/12/01 4:17 pm You can't view microfilm from the internet, you must order it, if possible and view it with a microfilm viewer. If you live in Canada you can usually order microfilm through inter-library loan, this can sometimes be done in the USA as well but that depends on the Archive. You should be able to find this out somewhere on the web site. CJ

Re: family tree search cj_31_1968 (F/Canada) 2/11/01 5:05 pm Hi Maury, I'm not really up on what is required to get your Native status, but I'm sure it involves providing proof, therefore the first thing you have to do is get birth, death and marriage certificates of your ancestors, starting with your parents and working back to your Native ancestor. Hope this helps some! CJ

Hello mjalyn (31/F/Silverdale, WA) 2/12/01 5:07 pm Hello, I'm Marea and I am looking for information on my father's side of the family. We do have a bit of info but I always seem to hit a wall everyso often and now is one of those times. We are looking for information on James Brackett's and Margaret Thatcher's family in Ontario. They are my great grandparents. We know that they got married December 23, 1885 (and their bdays) and that their parents are Stephen Thatcher, Mary Ann Brown, Martin Brackett, and Elizabeth Farris. The Thatcher family I have some info on but it is hard because there was 2 families with the same name in the same area. I have no information on the Browns, Brackett's, or Farris's. So if any of you have information or can tell me where I can find some I would appreciate it. Thanks Marea

Re: Hello cj_31_1968 2/12/01 6:35 pm Hi Marea! I don't know if you have this information or not, but I own the book, "The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West" Volume 14 Western District 1786 - 1856 Your Bracketts are not in the book but I do have the following marriage record: Stephen Thatcher, to Mary Ann Brown, both of Howard. 18 May 1847, by banns. Rev. Willoughby. Wit. Jacob Thatcher and James Brown. Hope this helps a bit and I will see if I can find reference to your Bracketts elsewhere. Sincerely, CJ

Re: Hello mjalyn (31/F/Silverdale, WA) 2/13/01 5:35 pm Thank you for the information CJ, threw internet I have managed to find a couple of cousins that had that information for me. We always do have problems with the Bracketts because we think that they are orginally from the US and may have gotten married down there. We do know that James Alexander Brackett (my great grandfather) was their only child except for a stepson. I think his name is Henry but I am not sure, I will have to check with my father. I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Margaret Thatcher and James Brackett. We are also trying to find out about a birth certificate for their first son William Ross Brackett who was born in Ontario before they moved to BC. We know that he was born on March 18, 1890 and then died in WW1 in France. I have really been trying to find out as much as I can because my grandmother is the only Brackett left here and at almost 96 she isn't going to last much longer (although with her stubborness she just might) lol. Thank you Marea

Surnames : shejag (43/F/WI.) 2/15/01 3:48 pm I had relatives that supposedly immagrated to Canada from Austria/Hungary. This would have been between WW1 and WW2 maybe.I was told they immagrated to Canada and that is like saying they went to the U.S.A. without saying a state. But if anyone sees anything with the surnames of RUFF or MERTH I would be interested.I cannot be any more specific on these.I do have a post card from my great aunt to my grandma saying that my aunt had visited with these cousins in Canada.Post card was dated in 1975 or so.Maybe they went to an area that was heavily populated by German speaking people? Thanks shejag By the way grammy thanks for the nice Valentines day message

Keep track of your names! grammyof9_ca (56/F/Nova Scotia) 2/16/01 2:10 pm Hi everyone, I just wanted to share a tip that I learned the hard way. It is much easier to keep track of your surnames and index names as you go along when making your genealogy web pages. If you use a program like Family Tree Maker or any other program it probably keeps track of it, but I wanted to do mine a little different. I am now putting all my names on file cards so that I can add to them as more information comes in. This is just something to keep in mind. grammyof9_ca

# 337

Okay Shejag here is a site you can find a list of Ruff Immigrants from between 1927 - 1935 who came to Canada. Go to: http://www.archives.ca click on English then on Online Research Tool: ArchivaNet, scroll down to Immigration Records 1925 - 1935 and click, then click search and put in the surname RUFF you should get back 39 results, many of these seem to be from Hungary as there is a HU listed beside them, others are from England and Switzerland but that just may be where they boarded their boats. Hope this helps you, CJ

Silverson mjalyn (31/F/Silverdale, WA) 2/24/01 5:23 pm When I first posted a message I only included my grandmother's side of the family I forgot to put in the one name that has really hit a dead end. My grandfather's parents were Nels Nelson and Mary Madelaine Silverson. We know that Granpa Nels came over from Sweden with his brother Eriq and they changed their last name spelling. Grandma Madelaine though we are really unsure of. We know that she had a brother named Alex (I have a picture of him) and he married and had children in Vancouver. I have her old bible that was given to her by the Salt Spring Island church she went to in 1885. It is the name Silverson that I can't find any info on because we are unsure if they maybe had changed the spelling of their last name too. We do know that they were either the first genernation born or just children when their family came from Europe and we think that they are Scandanavian but are unsure. If anyone can help me I really appreciate it. Marea

Taylors of Ontario madartist48 (52/M/s. ontario) 2/27/01 12:43 pm I have a great grandfather who lived in Ontario and his son who was born in Hamilton/Ontario. I would like to know if there is anyone who might have information on whether Willliam Taylor/married to Agnes ? and parents of James Taylor of Hamilton/Ontario was also born in Canada like his son James or was he born in Scotland as I suspect.

# 364

Re: Taylors of Ontario cj_31_1968 2/27/01 9:37 pm Hi Madartist48! I'd like to try to help you. Do you have any dates for these people, it would help me locate any information that may be out there? I did find a James Taylor in Ancaster in the 1871 census this is located in the same county as Hamilton. According to the census he was 60 years old and born in England. He was a carpenter. There was also several William Taylors in the Wentworth County area but none from Hamilton. They were born in England, the U.S. and Ontario. Hope some of this helps. CJ

Re: Taylors of Ontario cj_31_1968 2/28/01 9:27 pm So far all I can find is through the LDS web site at http://www.familysearch.org William Taylor m. 23 Dec 1884 Agnes Clark in Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland children: William Taylor b. 1885 Agnes S. Taylor b. 1887 Joseph Clark Taylor b. 1889 (female) Taylor b. 1891 James Taylor b. 1 Feb 1892 all the above children were born in Brechin, Angus Scotland. Do you know if there is a naming pattern in your family (ie: first son named after father's father)? That may help narrow down the search for William's birth information. Hope this helps! CJ

# 371

Re: Taylors of Ontario madartist48 (52/M/s. ontario) 3/2/01 12:29 am Thanks a lot CJ this confirms my search. Yes there is a pattern in the naming of the males in my family....William/ James/ John....Also thanks for the site I'll check it out and see if other searches that I have come up with can be verified thru this site.......great site....will recommmend it to one of my co-workers who is also into tracing his family roots although his are of Irish descent.

Re: Taylors of Ontario madartist48 (52/M/s. ontario) 3/3/01 10:48 pm Thanks once again for trying to help. I say trying because everthing fits except for the fact that my grandfather James was born in Hamilton/Ontario. My Aunt now says that she may be mistaken in the maiden name of her mother although she claims that the name Clark rings a bell. Perhaps she is wrong. If not then my calculations and findings are correct. If you could find anything otherwise let me know..............Terry

Re: Taylors of Ontario cj_31_1968 3/4/01 12:07 pm All I can suggest right now is too see if you can get a copy of James' birth certificate and or his death certificate. If he was born after 1869 you should be able to obtain a copy if he was born in Canada. CJ

#378

Re: Taylors of Ontario madartist48 (52/M/s. ontario) 3/5/01 8:48 am I have James marriage certificate but it only says father...William and mother...Agnes. William was married twice and I and my aunt don't know if Agnes was the second wife or first. So like you say I must see if I can now obtain a copy of his birth cerificate. The death notice only says that he was the husband of Isabella (Hardie). I have the original birth certificate of Isabella from Scotland.. Thanks again for trying to help.

Types of Marriage Records & Description cj_31_1968 3/5/01 3:53 pm You find marriage records in all sorts of forms, including: * Marriage bonds: financial guarantees that a marriage was going to take place. * Marriage banns: proclamations of intent to marry someone in front of a church congregation. * Marriage licenses: documents granting permission to marry. * Marriage certificates: witnessed documentary proof certifying the union of two people. Be careful not to confuse the date of the marriage with the date of a marriage bond, bann, or license, any of which could be filed from a few days to a few weeks before the wedding. In fact, none of these prenuptial agreements certifies that a marriage actually took place. Some folks got cold feet even in the old days and ducked out before ever making it to an altar or judge. Accept only an actual marriage certificate as proof of the couple's legal commitment. Hope this helps! CJ

I have some information on the family names listed above but not much. I also have family information covering some White, Ferguson, and Browns. I am in the Manitoulin Island area and also am looking for Bailey, Gibson, Richards and Dimi family lines. I will look over the messages and see if anything lines up with what I have already and will gladly add to anyones information. # 412 Re: kagawong lorettadonaldson 3/15/01 4:22 pm Hi there, It just so happens that my Grandma and Grandpa spent most of their marriage in Kagawong. They lived directly across from Bridal Veil Falls. Their names Olive (Bailey) Richards And Jenkins Luther Richards. Loretta
#415 Re: kagawong sjoymuir (56/F/British Columbia) 3/15/01 7:08 pm This is Neat!! I am reading about your family as submitted by Pat Rivait and Gloria Nichols to the history book - I am assuming you have the pedigree chart they did. Have you any information on Thomas Robson? Any ideas about any Robson that lived there? sjm
# 423 Re: kagawong sjoymuir (56/F/British Columbia) 3/17/01 11:08 am This is an amateur history that you can buy for about 10 dollars at the Kagawong library. It has a pedigree for each family and neat stories and pictures of the people. I do hope you are using the BDM 1869 to approx early 1900. You get the actual registration from Salt Lake for the cost of photocopy. The Robson name is not shortened. it appears two brothers came to Kagawong one headed west. Anything on them or their property, I would really appreciate. There is a website for Kagawong town - nice site. sjm
# 424 Re: kagawong lorettadonaldson 3/17/01 11:32 am Thanks for the information on the Kagawong history book. I will certainly look into it. I will check with my Aunt Doris to see if she knows anything about the Robson Family. She is the oldest of my Grandparents children and the most in the know about who is who and who was who. Sadly, we lost my Granny Richards a few years back or I would have checked with her. I am looking at a phone directory which contains the addresses of all who live in the area of Sudbury, Manitoulin, Espanola and other smaller communities. I see 5 Robson names listed. 2 live in Sudbury, 2 live in Copper Cliff and one lives in Lively. Are you interested in their addresses? I know that a number of former Islanders now live in Sudbury. Look forward to hearing from you soon, Loretta
