This is Blaze and Mr. John..

At 16 days old Blaze is past due for this disbudding.

(Disbudding is the removal of horn buds.)
~So the horns will not grow~
(Usually disbudding is done around 10 days old)

Blaze's horn buds are peeping through pretty good today..

1
So the first thing Mr. John has to do is shave the fur away from the buds...
This keeps the burning iron from coming in contact with the fur.
That would not only smell bad, but may even scare Blaze or Mr. John!
<<-- Now you can REALLY see those buds
Blaze is past due but it has to be done

So the next step is to give Blaze a few shots...

1st one being Tetanus Anti-toxin*
Mr. John stresses that it should be
given in the hip muscle or (IM)
away from the bone :O)

This shot protects against Tetanus

And the 2nd shot being 2/10cc of Banamine*
Given to relieve pain and inflamation (IM)
2
*The Tetanus Anti-toxin is used at disbudding and banding.

Then  CD&T shots are given at 2 months (2cc)  and then again 4 weeks later.
Then a 2 cc booster shot once a year...
It can be used  at the beginning of the 5th month of pregnancy
or give it to the dam when she freshens...
Alot of people give it to the dam while she is pregnant
so the kid will get a good load of antiboties from the dam's milk.

This shot protects against 2 different diseases
C&D protects against Enterotoxemia or
(Over Eating Disease)
&
T-  protects against Tetanus
* Banamine (FluMeglumine) By Vet presciption only
It is an anti-inflammatory that is good for bringing down high fever,
stopping severe diarrhea in very young kids,
calming the gut in digestive illnesses, and relieving pain and soreness.

Cannot be used but once every 36 hours, because it builds up in vital organs
and will do permanent damage to the animal,
including but not limited to ulcerations in the digestive system of the goat.

Dosage is 1cc per 100# body weight IM (injection given in the muscle)...
A newborn kid with fever and bad diarrhea could be given an injection of 2/10cc IM.
Keeps best in warm climates when refrigerated.
3
Now that Blaze is all protected..
Mr. John
places him in a special box
(Built by Mr. John from plans he received)

It is made to keep Blaze from squirming around and possibly burning himself or Mr. John. (There's a block inside the box to keep the kid in the standing position)

So it is a very important part
of the disbudding process

Now comes the dirty work..
The actual disbudding..
Here Mr. John is burning around the horn buds
And then he burns into the buds themselves..
further insuring that the job is done right..

This kills the horn cells that allow Blaze to grow horns..
Taking special care not to burn Blazes skin around the horn buds..
Or himself..

4
5
Now it's all done and Blaze is not only doing fine,
But he is more than ready to go play!

See the
copper colored ring around the buds?
That's a good thing!
That copper color is insurance that the horn cells
are burned correctly..
