Whitefield's Compromise School Budget Persuades Small Turnout
Story date: 08/06/2008
By Lucy L. Martin
It would be "unthinkable," said one voter at Whitefield's third town meeting since March, to go through a school budget approval process again. Most of the 45 people pennhurst state school attending Tuesday's special town meeting seemed to agree, endorsing a $3.6 million compromise spending plan seneca high school louisville ky that asks taxpayers to pay $69,696, or harvard business school 4.84 percent more than last year.
One woman indicated that there is a point where micromanaging the school department's job kapolei high school has to stop.
A hurdle remains, however. The validation vote must still be held next Monday to make the numbers official, and many who were previously vocal in supporting teacher reduction did not show up Tuesday night.
Sue McKeen said she had come to the meeting prepared to oppose the budget. Instead, she supported it.
The local increase stood at 9.47 percent in June when voters defeated the adjusted plan by an 11-vote margin.
School board member Marianne Marple earlier this summer favored cutting a teacher and expanding class numbers to bring the local burden down. However, at the Aug. 5 meeting, after spirited and at times intense debate, she said, "I would like
indian prarie school districtto make a plea to support this indiana high school sports compromise. It's a reasonable compromise." The contested position and small class sizes posed a stumbling block for some. Commenting on Whitefield's low student-teacher ratios, Carolee Withee, a retired schoolteacher who taught in a highly ranked Cumberland County school, said classes there numbered 23 or 25 students. "It was not unusual to have 27 kids in a class." Cathy Gregoire, objecting to a 5th- 6th grade split, questioned "what's wrong" with a kindergarten and first grade with 18 students each. She nursing school online also asked central berkshire school district if the committee had considered reinstating a half-day kindergarten bypassing school internet filters and was told no. School board vice chair Carole Cifrino said studies show that classes having 15 and fewer students "are important for assuring student success." Sandy Brown cited a study that found extra gains in lower grades to be most noticeable in a class size of 20 or 18 students and under. At Whitefield, there are 12 teachers in classes that average 15 students. Projected class configurations for 2008-09 show two teachers teaching a straight kindergarten of 12 students and a split kindergarten/first grade of about 12, with 13 in the first grade. Second and third grade have 17 each. "I can't believe you're asking us to pay this much in taxes with class glenwood school sizes like that," Brown said. Andrea Lani, mother of three young children, erupted, "This school already operates on a thin margin" and asked voters "not to quibble about five or 10 dollars more" a month in their tax bills. Selectmen said at their regular meeting Monday that with a 6.3 percent overall increase in the town budget, as computed by the budget committee, the taxes on a $100,000 valuation would go up about $107 if the 16.5 mill rate were to stay flat. But, chair Steve McCormick added, the town will gain valuation with new real estate on the temecula valley unified school district books and that gain will ease the tax burden. By how much will not be known, he said, san diego school district for illinois high school basketball a couple of weeks when the new mil rate will be set. Teacher Heather Northrup commented that kindergartners today come to school "not knowing how to do the basics," and it is very difficult to teach 18 five-year-olds how to tie their shoes, let alone begin reading. Tony Marple agreed with Northrup. At the somerset massage therapy school same time, he urged that voters blue springs high school recognize high school wrestling ohio the process of making a budget and adjusting it multiple times is "complicated. To go through this one more time
old school carsis unthinkable. When the school committee and budget committee are unanimous, it's time to move on." Sue McKeen added a warning. "I always school girls worry about the way a town grows. How it grows depends on how good its school history of school resource officer is." McKeen also asked if pine forest high school the validation vote, which will take place by secret ballot on Mon., Aug. 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the townhouse, "is projected to be ongoing. It seems to castrate the town meeting process." Supt. Francis Boynton explained that school consolidation law requires that "this step be for at least three years in cromartie high school the new school
peter smith schooldistrict. Communities (in the newly formed regional school unit) will then decide whether to keep on with chickahominy middle school it." He added that the requirement has proven both an extra centennial middle school complication and expense for his office. Vol. 133 - No. 32 This site is owned by Lincoln County News © 2002
