Passing on the Tradition

Passing on the Tradition is an electrifying concert performance by India's master sarode player Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. As if defying his seventy-four years, his concerts are an undeniably exciting event. Mr. Khan has spent his life Passing on the Tradition he learned from his father/guru, Achharya Baba Allauddin Khan, who was one of India's foremost musicians of this century. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri's rich and textured tabla accompaniment helps to set the mood for a performance one will not soon forget!
Raga Marwa Raga Marwa uses six notes. By combining only these notes you have to show the different emotions of Marwa which range from devotion and peace to a heroic mood. To show a new approach and at the same time maintain the character of this rag is a difficult job. In this particular performance I tried to keep the pure style of my father by taking more risks with the rag. In the past I haven't taken so many chances because with Marwa the danger of going out of tune or choosing the wrong passage is so great. My style of playing in both of the ragas on this recording was a combination of gayaki (vocal) and tantra kari (instrumental). Evening Rag
Raga Puriya Kalyan In Raga Puriya Kalyan you can really show the complete beauty of how two ragas are working together, Rag Puriya and Rag Kalyan. The problem is to maintain the character of the two ragas. In Puriya the main line is N r S and in Kalyan it is g m P. If you can show these phrases while using other notes you will see the beauty of Puriya Kalyan. The moods of this rag are peace, pathos and joy and it is played from evening until night. Evening Rag
