Breeding and Raising African Clawed Frogs

At 10 months to a year Clawed Frogs are sexually mature. Mating general happens durning the spring. And usually Clawed Frogs mate up to 4 times a year. If you decide to mate your frogs you'll need to make sure you have a big enough tank as they need more room and a seperate tank to place your adult frogs when they're done or the tadpoles will become frog food. The water should be kept at 70 degrees and kept clean.

Now that you have everything ready, let the mating begin! Usually at night is when this happens. The male grabs the female and they do a "dance" from the bottom to the top of the tank. Amplexus (mating embrace) is pelvic or inguinal (in the groin) You will see the male grasping the female with his forarms just above her hind legs. Some frogs use axillary amplexus (male grasps the female near her front limbs). Up to 2,000 sticky eggs will be produced during a 3 to 4 hour period. They will be fertilized with in the uspide down position just inder the water surface. They will scatter over the alloted area and be unprotected.

The tadpoles will hatch within 2 days. Usually it takes 6-8 weeks before the eggs become froglets. You need to allow at least 1 pint of water per tadpole. 98% of their water needs to be changed every day even if it looks clear. Never handle tadpoles even with a net. They may not develop right as a result of this.

The tadpoles do not have a mouthparts so food needs to flow in the water small enough for them to feed on. Powered egg or goldfish flakes ground really fine is a good food for them. Be careful not to over feed them since their gills cannot process needed oxygen when the water is full of food particles.
