Learning About Non-Western Cultures
and the Eastern Hemisphere
For  Meagan's 6th grade year, we chose to utilize the Sonlight Non-Western Cultures program. Again, we didn't follow their schedule (we utilize other aspects of their IG) and we added in many extra readers, read-alouds, and resources.  We also incorporated foods and cooking from the cultures studied  I didn't do a very good job of keeping track of the recipes but I'll share some of the ones that I can remember.

For each of the books we read, I had Meagan fill out a sheet that includes the book title, author, date, book summary, and her thoughts on the book.  These have been really fun to look back at.

She also filled out a sheet for each country that included basic facts about the country as well as a drawing of the flag, information on climate, a description of the land and bodies of water, and any other interesting information.
Instead of just reading Seabird, we used the Beautiful Feet study of Seabird and started it a week or so before actually getting started with the rest of the material.  We had already done all of the other books and mapping for the Beautiful Feet "Geography Through Literature" program.  I had saved Seabird to use now.

We also used the
Trail Guide to World Geography (Geography Matters) as well as Uncle Josh's Outline Map Book.  I wanted to focus a bit more on geography.  These fit in very well with what we were studying.  We primarily used the mapping assignments and the questions (Geography Trails).

Here is the "key" to some of the books we used:

Material World: A Global Family Portrait by Peter Menzel
