LEARNING ABOUT  U.S. HISTORY PART 1

For Meagan's third grade year we started a study of U.S. History through about 1840. Our original plan was to do this in one year (36 weeks) and then move on to study 1840 through the twentieth century for fourth grade. But, we found that there were just too many good books to read.  So, we ended up stretching each of the weeks below to one and a half to two to even three weeks.  This meant that the first part of American history  continued into Meagan's fourth grade year. Here is a list of books that I've put together. We will probably not read all of these now -- some will be used when Meagan does  U.S. History again in high school. Some we just won't have the time to fit in.   Some of the books on our list are from different series of books.  Some of the books we are using over a period of many weeks so I got lazy and started using abbreviations.  Here is the key to those abbreviations: Rainbow = Rainbow Book of American History by Earl Schenck Miers Golden = Golden Book of America by Irwin Shapiro HUS = History of US by Joy Hakim (series of 10 books) SOA = Story of America -National Geographic Picture Atlas PEAH = Pictorial Encylopedia of American History - Davco Publ. Co. Story of USA = The Story of the U.S.A. by Franklin Escher Jr. CFA = Childhood of Famous Americans COF = Cornerstone of Freedom Dover = Dover Coloring Book @ = Reader (Meagan didn't really start reading until she was about 7.  So, I searched for easy readers with historical information. The "Readers" are the books that she reads aloud.)
