What do you admire in others? The reason I ask is because when you have answered that question you will find out what you yourself should be practicing. Do you admire the guitar exploits of Jimi Hendrix? Well, then you should probably be learning how to play the guitar. If you don't know what you admire in others, then you might look to what you do in your spare time. Do you watch movies? Well, then you should try your hand at screenwriting. This is a simple process, but yet arguably lost on many. I -- for example -- know a comedian who LOVES musicians. A lot of people buy into the idea that they simply don't have the talent in a particular area that they have never really tried to practice consistently. 'Talent' should really be defined as genuine interest plus the discipline to practice. Genuine interest in a thing should naturally give rise to practice of that thing. Unfortunately, this natural process is often blocked by the common misconception that talent is some innate thing. So when you admire someone for something they can do, don't just sit there, emulate. It will provide you with the "purpose" you always needed. |
