What is money? Some -- like the Bible -- say the love of it is the root of all evil. While that may be true, money really should be thought of as "time" or "freedom". You've also no doubt heard the expression that "time is money" -- this is better said in reverse. Because without money, your time belongs to someone else -- and "they" always get more than their money's worth in that kind of situation. You see, without money, you are basically a slave. In essence, poverty is slavery. So don't get caught up in romanticizing the bohemian lifestyle. |

Most Americans understand this and therefore rightfully glorify money. Certain groups know better than most what slavery is all about, and they know that money -- in today's society -- is the ticket away from that status. Other groups, like whites who have grown up in upper-middle class situations, seem sometimes to be too easily seduced by the idea that "money can't buy happiness" -- concluding that they therefore don't need money to be happy. While that may be true, they forget that without money, their lives are not their own, but rather belong to their penny-pinching bosses. And happiness -- and thus immortality -- under THOSE conditions becomes a difficult thing to attain. When you allow yourself to be poor, telling yourself, "I don' t need to be rich, bla bla," you relegate yourself to slavery out of some foolish disdain for material things. It is not noble to be a slave if you really don't have to be. Actually, to do that is a form of suicide. So get that money, son -- because freedom isn't a right -- it has to be bought with cold hard cash! |
