7:30 in the Library Conference Room
1) Discuss Computers Off initiative
a. Mr. Best from WHS Technology Department will share websites, ideas, questions
-We were told that if the computers are continuelly shut down and rebooted the hardrives will wear and break. The next best thing would be setting them to sleep, the school saves money doing this.
- laptops use the minimum amount of power
- Computers use energy when off but ruduced significantly when on.
- How often would computers need to be fixed? How much would it cost?
b. Assign students for follow-up:
-info sheet for teachers
-training for teachers
-info sheet/posters for school & website
-data collection: how many computers? How much energy? How much $? How
much carbon? An experiment with a line power meter can be done if the mechanism is availabe.This could then be written up and printed in the Wellesley Townsman.
2) Discuss Green Building initiative
a. Ms. Gard speaking for a community advocacy group will share an info sheet and contacts
with us and answer questions?
b.Address student research on topic and determine next step...letter to townsman? Prepare
presentation for Mrs. Wong and School committee? Further research needed?
3) Recycling initiative
a. Students share info to be given to Mrs. Smith (Lucy's mom) We need two bins in each of the ninety-five classrooms, that means 190 bins. To acount for the price we may sell energy efficient light bulbs after the logistics are figured out.The light bulbs save $44 in electricity costs.
4) Seminar day
a. Students share ideas...what do we want our groups to be about? In addtion, do we know
any one that we want to come give a seminar... environmental advocates? People who
work for solar/renewables? grass roots organizers? environmental lawyers?
b. assign a team to fill out our submission form and work on our presentation.Lucy and Frankie will get us in but nothing further has been decided.
5) Solar Panels
a. Explain situation as it stands now...is this something we want to take on?
6) Administrative clean-up
a. new ideas? earth day, education activities, cleaning supplies, cafeteria trays
b. difficulty with website? are we ready to share it?
c. take group picture and submit to year book and webite
d. new schedule for semester 2
7) Questions that Arose
-How much CO2 does a car emmit?
-How much does it cost to keep the computers on all night? How much carbon is being relased into the atmosphere because of it?
