Planned Meeting Agenda for January 26th | ||||
1) Computers-off Initiative a. Which students will front this project? Wes b. Experiment: Frankie and Lucy obtained a power line meter. Which computers do we test? Whose permission do we need? When do we do it? Where do we post/send the results? Must test 3 different kinds of computers: Flat LCD screens, laptops, and the mac computers in the library. Info sheet for teachers --> rough draft by next meeting, finished sheet by end of february. Start considering ways to tell kids that they can sleep their computers at home as well. 2) Lightbulb Sales a. Which students will front this project? Helen b. Some things to consider: - Where do we sell the product? Considering dump, but we need to find out whose permission we need to sell things there. The dump would be a good place because people going there are already recyclers and clearly believe in conserving energy. - How much? What do the profits go to? We need to figure out if the light bulbs are being donated to us from Ms.Gard or if we are paying a price. If there is a price to buy them, we need to start considering how we will obtain the money. Someone suggested a "girl scout cookie" method, going around to houses and collecting money for the light bulbs, and then delivering them at a later date. - Advertisements (meeting with Mr. Hatch to be scheduled) A good method for advertising would be at first to obtain information about the light bulbs that would appeal to the average person. The special light bulbs put out the same amount of light as regular but use about 10% of the energy. This means they last significantly longer as well. 3) Seminar Day (*discuss this topic first b/c of deadline) a. Which students will front this project? Not clear who will give seminar, but Frankie filled out form. b. As was never discussed last meeting --> Do we know anyone who can be a guest speaker at our seminar? Environmental lawyers, advocates, grass roots organizers, people who work for solar/renewables? We may not be able to get a special guest, but some other ideas would be a powerpoint to structure the presentation, and clips from movies such as An Inconvenient Truth and The Day After Tomorrow. The title will be: How environmentally friendly is WHS? The main goal of the powerpoint is not to bore students with the green renevation, but mainly teach students how they can conserve energy more in a typical school day at WHS. c. Assign two students to fill out submission form and work on our presentation (Lucy and frankie have form.) 4) Green Schools and Green Building Project a. Assign student to try and obtain governmental checklist sheet for green school project to be reimbursed. b. Discuss ways that high school is already green, and ways that we can make it more green before the actual construction in order to get reimbursed (i.e. recycling bins, more bike racks, smaller parking lots.) MBSA is a governmental comittee that rates high schools in Massachusetts. The WHS received a 4 on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is the best. A higher rating will increase chance of receiving a sort of reimbursement for building green. c. Discuss what needs to happen before we meet with Mrs. Wong with our requests/info 5) Recycling Bins/Lunch Trays a. Record official data, assign students to front this project, discuss alternative lunch tray ideas. b. How can we make money to support the eventual costs of bins and trays? |
