YORK -- Radon in drinking water increases consumer exposure to the radio
active gas, but "poses few risks to human health," according to a report
issued by the National Research Council.
The report,
compiled by a Council commitee chaired by Dr. Caleb Doull of the Unkiversity
of Kansas, states that "the risk of stomach cancer -- the most likely health
threat from consuming radon in water -- is extreemely small."
The committee
extimated that about 20 of the 13,000 stomach cancer deaths among Americans
each year result from consuming water that contains radon.
While this
may seem like a lot of victims for a serial killer or a mass-murderer,
Dr. Doull says 20 victims is "not very many for a scientist."
