Whyshouldivote.com cuts through the rhetoric, and deconstructs
the political process to help you make an informed decision on election day.
This site is your one-stop shop for the campaign. Forget what the media tells
you, this is the real deal about the election.
This
election is crucial. VERY CRUCIAL. This is an unprecedented time in American
history. We are involved in no major wars, we have no obvious immediate enemy, the
economy is booming, and social progress for America’s minorities is at an all
time high. This is precisely what makes this election tougher. Since their are
no apparent, “real” issues looming on the horizon, why should you care to vote,
and why should you vote, since the guys running don’t inspire you to get off
your bum and go to the polling booth. Whyshouldivote.com will outline for you
where the major candidates stand on several key issues that relate to you as a
young voter. We can help you make up your mind when it comes to who should lead
our country into the next millennium. Take a look below and find out what is at stake…..
1) The Supreme Court-
since the President chooses the Supreme Court, whoever wins will have a drastic
effect on the outcome of supreme court decisions for the next 20 years. Supreme
Court nominees serve a lifetime, so once they’re on it, they’re on it for good.
This could impact major policy issues such as ABORTION (for more on abortion,
click here)-Roe v. Wade was almost overturned by a 5-4 decision. Affirmative
action, Gay rights issues, and Education are also hot topics that the Supreme
Court has dealt with. George Bush says he would choose new justices in the mole
of Anthony Scalia and Clarence Thomas, the court’s two most conservative
judges, who want to repeal a woman’s right to choose. Al Gore said he would
impose a litmus test and choose only justices who support abortion rights. This
is VERY BIG. So if you want a court that is either liberal, or conservative, or
even moderate, get ye to a polling booth.
·
Federal Judges- The President also nominates other federal judges, who
set the tone of issues such as diversity, and other decisions that don’t even make
it to Supreme Court, but are important nevertheless, and determines how the US
acts on affairs in other parts of the world, such as Africa, Latin America,
Asia, and Europe.
·
Foreign Policy- Just think, who do you want to represent you to the
leaders of the world? George Bush or Al Gore? Although both may agree on many
policy issues, they differ with respect to several key policy issues-for an
analysis of foreign policy, click here. Issues such as America’s response to
organizations like the World Bank, and America’s role in the world as
peacekeeper are important issues .
·
The Economy- Although there are relatively few that argue this
point, the past 8 years have been unprecedented in terms of economic prosperity
in the U.S. The continuance of this is also at stake in the next election. If
you’re earning any dough, you better vote for the man that will help you
continue this roll.
· Control of the Congress and the Senate- Like the Supreme Court, whoever controls the House and the Senate controls the course of the Nation on practically every major issue out there.
NOW TAKE A LOOK AT GORE AND BUSH ON THE ISSUES
Now that we gave you an overview of what’s important, let’s
look at the candidates themselves, and how they stand on important issues. For
purposes of expediency, we’re going to compare Gore and Bush together, simply
because they are the top two leading candidates with the most realistic chance
of winning. Then, we’ll look at Nader’s role separately and where he stands, in
addition to analyzing if a vote for Nader is a vote for Bush- which a few of
you out there are wondering.
