Coming out to Christians can be a very difficult thing. Most of us are raised in a culture where it is far more acceptable to be Christian than to be Pagan. This is changing, but there are many myths circulating about witches that fan flames of unacceptance. Before you come out, be sure to have answers to common questions that Christians will ask: Do you worship the Devil? Do you practice Magic? What is Magic? As a Wiccan, you should know ther answers to these things. Remember above all, that being a Wiccan just might be your true calling, and don't let anyone try to make you feel bad about it. Explain to your friends or family that your particular beliefs just don't fit in to the Christian way of thinking. They will most likely try to get you to come back to their side, and their intentions will most likely be good. Stand your ground. You are worth just as much as they are. Freedom of religion means any religion. Be sure that you yourself know why you have decieded to be known as a Wiccan. I recommend coming out to everyone after you have been initiated, and only when the time is right for you. Please read my section on self-initiation for information on what this entails. Above all, stay calm and reasonable. Let them know that you have complete respect for their religion as well. It can be infuriating when people try to "bring you (back) to their way of thinking." Just pray to the Goddess in your mind for strength, and know that you are following a difficult but ancient and rewarding path. |
