Tools of the Witch

The one thing I enjoy the most is stocking up on the magickal items that I will need to perform ritual work.  The best thing you can do is whenever it is possible, make your own.  That way the item will be filled with your personal vibrations.  It isn't always possible to do that especially if you aren't artistically inclined, which unfortunately, I am not.  So, most of my items are store bought.

There are a few things to remember when acquiring your tools, especially when you do not know their history prior to your owning them.

1.  You should cleanse
all of your tools and accessories (including jewelry) prior to using them.  This also applies to items you have made yourself.

2.  You should not use your tools or accessories for anything but magickal purposes or performing rituals.

3.  You shouldn't touch another's tools without their permission and don't allow anyone else to touch yours without permission either.  Of course if it's a tool for divination such as crystals or tarot cards where it's necessary to work with another persons energy, then touching is permissible.  This items may be cleansed as well afterward.

The Tools

The Wand - The purpose of the wand is to project your energy to a certain place, person, object or dimension.  They are usually made of wood or copper insulated by leather.

The Broom - (Bossom, Besom)  May be used for decoration, but is typically used to sweep away negative energy out of an area.  Basically represents the female witch and is her means for travellin into dreamtime.

The Chalice - A symbol of emotion and fertility.  They are used in works of dedication and initiation, holiday rituals to honor the gods/goddesses and certain spellwork.

The Pentacle - A flat disc with a pentagram and possibly other symbols as well, inscribed on it.  It's origin is in ceremonial magick and it's basic use is for invoking entities and for protection.  Silver Ravenwolf says that it "is an excellent tool for empowering jewelry and gems, as you place them in the center of the five-pointed star.  Poppets for healing should be placed here, as well.  The pentacle should be upright at all times while on your altar".

The Bolline - a curved tool used to cut things in the physical realm such as herbs, inscribing candles, cords, etc.  It should not be used for everyday things such as cooking or eating although some witches do.  Again it's a matter of choice.

The Athame/Sword - is used for commanding and manipulating power.  Usually a double-edged dull knife and not used for cutting anything on the physical plane.  Most handles are black, but they do not have to be.  Some witches use swords instead.  Usually used to cast the circle.  A wand may be used instead of an athame just as well.  It is up to the individual witch.
