Traditions surrounding the Sabbat of Imbolc stem from the concepts of anticipation and preparation. We anticipate the imminent arrival of Spring, and the arrival of the "Bridegroom", the Sun as he returns to the Goddess, the Earth. In Celtic traditions the "Bride" is the Goddess Brighid, Goddess of Fire, often represented in ritual by a corn dolly dressed as a bride. We prepare both for the coming of Spring and for the "Wedding" of the Goddess and the God. Things that would be done to prepare for the bridegroom's arrival and things that would be done to clean and purify both our homes and ourselves, are done both symbolically and practically. |
