How many times throughout his childhood will one hear that magick doesn't exisit, or is supernatural, filled monsters and evil forces? None of these descriptions match up to what magick really is. The dictionary definition of the word magic is "a secret or mysterious power over the imagination or will". However, one of magick's most renowned pracitoners, Scott Cunningham, defined it as, " The movement of natural energies to manifest a positive, needed change. Magic[k] is the process of rising energy, giving it purpose (through visualization) and releasing it to create change. This is a natural (not supernatural) practice." This definition eliminates those monstrous myths and stage tricks as being magick. Now, who would have the most realistic, and true definition of magick, the dictionary, and centurary old myths, or a real pracitoner? Magick can be classified into six groups: Ceremonial, Sympathetic, Contagious, Attracting, Banishing and Protecive, and Binding. Ceremonial magick is usually preformed as a ritual and is either a cermony or a celebration. Examples include Handfastings, and Sabbat rituals. Sympathetic magick involves desires being manifested in the material plane. Herbalism generally falls under this catergory. Contagious magick is the process of charging an object with certain energies to produce a desired effect. Some example incude the process of making talismans and amulets and consecrating tools. Attracting magickal uses a combination of contagious and sympathetic magick to attract certain things or qualities into one's life. Banishing and protective magick begins with excorising the negativity and following with some from of protection. For example, taking a ritual bath cleanses or banishes the negativity away, while casting a circle protects for the extrusion or intrusion of negative energy. Binding, especially that of other beings, is rarely used in magick. Binding either enlights a person with love, or rids them of evil. Though binding things such as fears or bad habits is wonderful, binding other humans may affect their path of life and can possibly result in negative karma on the part of the binder for taking over the will of the bindee. Sometimes, even without be called upon, these forces of magick will manifest in the world. It is nothing to be scared of or to damn. Magick is all around us. It is wholly natural and can improve the qualilty of life. |
