Looking at pictures of this dress, I thought it was magickal, etheric. I also used to listened to the music from that scene to help me fall asleep. I spent hours trying to figure out how it was made, but could not, so I decided to go for something that would have the same essence, but that would be more practical i.e. I could actually wear it. My family is used to my love of costumes, but the comment I get most often when planning a costume is “When are you going to wear it!” and sometimes, it gets the better of me. I made the dresses (yes, I made both) for Nancy’s 21st birthday. The dress was my present to her, and while you’re making one, why not make two! I love the feel of it. It’s so light, I feel like an elvish priestess when I wear it.
Fabric
The fabric is a sheer lavender polyester. To make both dresses, I bought 9 m, but that wasn’t enough for what I had origilnally planed.
Pattern
I used Simplicity 7156, view B as a base, because of the scowl neck. Then I lengthened and widdened the skirt and opened the top of the sleeves so they fall open, a bit like a chiton. The front and back pieces of bodice hold by two 1 inch seems at the shoulder. Originaly, I wanted to make the sleeves very long and in a pointed leaf shape, but I ran out of fabric, so I had to keep the short sleeves. In the back, there is a cape which is one piece of fabric 150 cm long. Both sides are gathered by ribbons that tie the cape to the soulder of the dress. It gives the back a nice flowy look.
Advice
When working with sheer fabric, try to serge the edge of the fabric instead of having a rolled edge. It helps keep the flowiness. |
