A couple years ago, Nancy and I decided to go and spend the night at Le Château du Sir d’Howard, a medieval themed dinner and show. Nancy’s medieval wardrobe is quite impressive (she has alot of store bought garb in addition to all the clothes she’s made herself) but I only had a couple of pieces and I didn’t feel like wearing any of them. I decided I would make something simple, inspired by some dresses in The Mists of Avalon.

Inspired by Harry Potter, I also made a witch’s hat with some leftover fabric.

It is such a comfortable dress, I’ve worn it many times (I usually like to make a new costume for every occasion). It’s also multifunctionnal: wear it like it is, it’s a Medieval dress. Add some pointed ears and you’ve got an Elf maiden. Take off the ears and put on the hat, you’re now a Diagon Alley Witch, ready for some cauldron shopping.

Fabric

I found this wonderful lilac summer polyester fabric that looks a bit woven.

The trim is of white with golden edges.

The belt is a piece of satin cord simply tied a bit to the side.

Pattern

As a base, I used McCall’s 9083 view A. I the lengthend and widened the skirt and modified the sleeves to make them wide and pointed.

For the hat, I used Simplicity 9887 view A and I widened the brim.

Advice

Oh how I hate to admit this, but sometimes, one dress can be used for many different characters and you don't necessarily need to make a new one each time.
A nice general picture of the dress. You can really see the sleeves' shape. It was really important to me to lace the back to give the dress more realism.
I love this picture. I find I look so elvish on it. If only all my ironing had survived transport to the photo shoot site!
Here you can see the square neckline very well.
Now I know you can't see it on the picture, but this is a pointy witch's hat.
