This gown is one of the first I made, with the help of my mom. It looks rich and I found a special occasion to wear it: my grand parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. Of course, as always, I was the only one wearing medieval clothing. People of my family don’t especially like costumes. The choice of fabrics made me put this dress in the category of non-authentic medieval, but it was perfect for the occasion. The front of the dress is opened to see and give the illusion of an under skirt. It’s only 2 pieces of fabric but it really gives the impression of an under skirt, plus it uses a smaller quantity of fabric.
Pattern
I have used McCall’s 3663 as a base. I have changed the collar to make it closer to what we see in the movie.
Fabric
It took a lot of time to choose which fabric I would use for the collar. I finally used a gold chinese brocade with flowers(+-0.8m). The inside of the sleeve and the faux underskirt is a green satin with pale flowers (+-2-3m). The rest of the dress is green paned velvet (-5m).
Advice
A major detail I didn’t think of at the moment is we see the seem in the sleeves. My mother and I never thought we should cut the pattern to get the seem on top of the arm for the inside sleeve so you wouldn't notice the seem so easily. Another advice: this kind of sleeve requires a lot of fabric. |
