I choose to make mine black and not brown because black can be worn with anything. It’s a question of usefulness and convenience. The pattern I used was a dress, very easy to make and only needs 3 m of fabric. That’s why I have used a more expensive fabric. Because of the silver-grey fur, it looks like a very expensive winter coat, but it can only be worn in late autumn or early spring, it’s not warm enough to be worn in the winter.

Pattern

Like I said, it’s the pattern of a dress, McCall’s 3686. I have used the sleeves of McCall’s 3663 (Orange dress). Very easy to do.

Fabric

Because it needs a smaller quantity of fabric than a dress (3m) I choose an expensive fabric: lookalike boiled wool. It wasn’t on sale but the faux-fur was, so I bought 1 m, but I used less than that. The fur is silver-grey and looks more natural than a lot of other faux-furs out there. I think a brown coat with a black or brown fur would be a good choice too because it could be worn at anytime and wouldn’t look too fancy.

Advice

Fur can be very difficult to sew with a normal sewing machine. Mine doesn’t like it because it’s too thick. But I’m lucky because my mother has an old industrial machine which can do anything. The laced sleeves are not very practical: because it always moves and doesn’t stay in place, someone has to lace it for you every half-hour. If it’s tied too tight, it’s not very comfortable.
