Interpreting Signs

Signs are a focal point through which the cosmos filters into our physical reality. They integrate spiritual abstractions and give them meaning within our lives. They are not staid and lifeless, they are living, viable symbols that reflect the dynamic interplay of the forces in the universe.

Signs function in your life as a reflection of your inner state of being. What you are aware of consciously is such a small part of what is actually occuring within your subconscious mind. However, the signs around you are always giving you clues to the deeper reality within you.

Reflective signs can also give you an inner view of deep emotional processing. If there is an old karmic pattern that is just about to surface, it will first appear in your life as a reflective sign. If there are old childhood issues that are ripe to be resolved and healed, they will first appear in your life as reflective signs.

Reflective signs are valuable because they help you to become aware of the underlying reality present in your life, and this self-awareness leads to wisdome and ultimately to peace.

We all have conscius and subconscious beliefs about ourselves and the life around us, and sometimes these beliefs are at odds with one another. The beliefs that specifically dictate the quality of life, however, are our subconscious beliefs, which are generally so deep-seated that we're not even aware of them. They affect our perception of reality just as tinted glasses allow only certain colors to reach our eyes.

Our subconscious programming directs the way we see the world around us and also determines the way others see us. This programming comes from the way others related to us when we were children, from decisions that we made in past lives, and from the collective unconscious fo the society in which we live. If you are not sure what your subconscious beliefs are, just look at your life. Your life is an accurate projection of your subconscious beliefs about yourself and life.

Everything around us has energy and that energy responds to our expectations. When you consciously, or unconsciously project a question, concern or expectation into the universe, it responds. Literally, the universe around you will coalesce to match the energy you are projecting. The universe around you is a sign of your focus.

Our inner, core beliefs can be likened to gravity. Gravity is so much a part of our ground of being that we don't have conscious awareness of the many poinds of pressure exerted on every square inch of our bodies at every moment. Gravity is such a fundamental part of what we take for granted as reality that we almost never think about it. Core beliefs become so much a part of our view of ourselves and the world that we don't even know that they are beliefs. They are embedded in our personal energy fields. And these subconscious beliefs continually coalesce into form. As your energy emanates from your body in undulating waves all around you, it projects your beliefs into the world. Beliefs act as magnets, pulling to you situations and people that are congruous with your subconscious beliefs. In other words, your personal world is created and manifested by the core beliefs in your subconscious mind.

The signs in your life constantly reflect your subconscious beliefs about the world around you. If you want to discover what is occurring within the depths of your being at any given time, just look at and listen to the signs around you.

Your signs will either repeatedly appear to you, will seem to jump out at you or will linger in your mind. They can present themselves visually, or thru smell, touch, sounds, a hunch, a dream or an emotion.

Signs come from your culture, your society, your religion or from past life memories stored in the subconscious mind. Sometimes signs reflect your peripheral awareness. At every moment, within the environment surrounding each of us, there is so much more occuring than is available to our conscious mind. On a deeper level, we are subconsciously aware of the thoughts, feelings and energy of those around us.The emotions of others will travel straight through you unless there is something inside you to which they can attach.

There are times when your feelings are giving you signs or messages from your inner wisdom, or when your feelings are signs of the feelings of others.

When you feel surges of emotion, take time to check your inner wisdom to see if you have tuned into someone else's emotions. Sometimes your feelings can be an indication of resistance to personal expansion and inner growth, and indication of a blockage that needs to be overcome.

What you think others are thinking about you can often be a very clear sign about what you are thinking about yourself. It could be that the person doesn't like something about you, it could also be that the perceived judgement is a judgement that you have made about yourself.

People may cross your path with a sign or message for you. Every person in your life is there for a reason. You couldn't see them otherwise. Often, however, we don't hear the messages because we don't listen to what is being said. We usually spend almost all the time thinking about how we are going to respond. If you go beneath the surface, every conversation has the potential of greater meaning. Underlying the words are deep, powerful, presonal signs.

Practice conscious listening. Just listen and be in the present, right now. After a while you will begin to hear signs in the form of inner truths and personal messages beneath the words that are being said out loud.

Everytime you follow your intuition your personal vibration intensifies, the more your personal vibration is intensified, the more you will pull into your life. This is a universal law.

Divine signs. Often there is a warm, expansive feeling in the center of your being, accompanied by an infusion of love. Colors of your environment will seem richer and more vibrant, almost as if lit from within. Often there is a "knowing" that occurs in conjunction within the sign that your life is unfolding exactly as it should, that your life is guided, and that you are perfect just as you are.

Sign Interpretation:

When observing the signs in your life, be as loving as possible to yourself. Don't use your signs as yet another way to view yourself in a negative lignt or to do something that you don't want to do. The signs are gentle nudges from the universe, from your higher self and from the Divine, but you are the creator of your destiny and there are no wrong choices.

The manner in which you interpret a sign is less important that the meaning that you derive from it. Remember that only you can know the true meaning of your sign.

Again, if you have poor self-esteem, don't use signs as yet another way to condemn yourself. Always look for the kindest interpretation of your sign.

1. Intuition- ask yourself, "If I knew, what would this sign mean?" or create a dialoge within yourself, "I know you don't know, but if you did, what would this sign mean?"

2. Feeling- the feeling or emotion that you associate with a sign.
Think of the sign, close your eyes and still your mind.
Notice what emotion you would most likely link with the sign, and look back over your life and remember the last time you had that same emotion.
Notice any memories associated with those feelings.
What is the message from the memories?

Most often your sign is associated either with that particular situation or with the issues underlying it.

3. Become the Sign- to use this method you would say, "I am the ______ sign and I represent _____" using whatever first comes into your mind. For multiple characters in the sign, imagine that you become each, one by one.
After you have defined each, imagine that they are talking to each other. What is the meaning in your life.

4. Use a Dictionary- Very often, just reading the exact definition of a sign can be of assistance in your interpretation.

5. Make a Sign Journal- record your personal signs. Watch for recurring themes, feelings, or symbols.
Whenever a sign appears in your life, write it down and then list the meanings you associate with it.

Some examples to get you started:

Clouds- may tell us things of ourselves or of those around us.

Cross- a universal symbol from the most primordial times. It has been a symbol of the cosmic axis between heaven and earth, the union of opposites. The merging of all existence on the horizontal and vertical plancs, as well as the infinite expansion in all directions that denotes eternal life. It was also thought to represent the 4 elements that comprise the world, united in the cosmic center.

Spiral- a transformation sign. It can represent the intricate component basic to all life-the DNA helix. A symbol of evolution, upwardly spiraling for progress and achievement, downward for despair and negativity.

Triangle-the power of integration through the triad of body, mind and spirit; of past, present and future. The power of protection.

Water-symbolizes your subconscious, your deep unknown places. The mysterious inner realms within you.

Wind-we listen to the wind's sound and this can tell us of sickness, death, peole coming to visit us. Mother Earth's changes and moods, good news, changes with the seasons and our own moods.

Whatever method you use, allow your intuition to assert itself in the interpretation. Ask questions, reflect on the meaning. Some signs can work in a reverse manner. By indicating something we don't want to do, it opens us up to the realization that we really don't want it, and allows us to explore why. Or they may remind us of past situations where we had similar encounters and what the outcome of those were, thus preparing us not to repeat the same mistakes.

Remember that only you can know the true meaning of your sign.
