Garbled Throat
24 Jul 99
Do I speak through garbled throat
That you can not comprehend
So you fly in the face of contention?
Or, shall I say that you betray
The hope that I instill in you
Through what I tell you true?
If I give you pause
~ that moment where breath ceases ~
do you take advantage
bending the thought I give,
or do you caress the veracity
gentle hand on heart of truth
and save the harmful word?
And, I then must wonder
How do I turn my tide
And learn to trust the man
And not fear the commitment
[Look, my heart clenches at the mere word]?
I give you this sweet soul
Surrounded by barbed walls of anger
And pray that hope does not fail
As all have failed before.
I know the disheveled heart
That wanders on its way
To find no happiness
That itself does not own,
And want that not again.
Do I speak through garbled throat,
Or do you betray the hope?
